Des Mahoney named a top golf instructor in Tennessee

A local golf pro was once again named as one of the 12 top instructors in Tennessee by Golf Digest.

Des Mahoney of Centennial Golf Academy was one of only three golf instructors in East Tennessee to be named to the prestigious list — golf’s most comprehensive nationwide ranking.

“I’ve always enjoyed golf and teaching it. I’m always able to go to seminars and I’m always working to get better and better with my teaching. I can help anyone looking to improve their game,” Mahoney said.

He works with golfers on their entire game — from the swing to the short game. Sometimes a golfer just needs to work on a particular problem they struggle with — Mahoney can help with that as well.

People of all ages, from high school and up, have benefitted from his instruction.

Golf Digest puts together the list of top golf instructors every two years. Mahoney has made that list for the past 15 years in Tennessee.

A PGA member with 22 years of experience teaching golf, he is no stranger to awards. In 1995 he was the Hawaii PGA Teacher of the Year and in 2005 was named the Tennessee PGA Teacher of the Year.

Overall, Mahoney has six PGA teaching awards.

He has studied under or worked for Hank Haney, Chuck Cook, David Ledbetter, Mike Hebron, and other PGA professionals.

A contributor to Golf Illustrated Magazine, PGA Magazine, USA Today, Mahoney is a member of the Proponent Group, a network of golf’s most successful teachers.
