Barbara Jean Harness

Barbara Jean Harness, 89, of Clinton passed away Jan. 1, 2026, and was joyfully welcomed into her eternal home by her Lord and Savior, surrounded by the love and prayers of her family.

A woman of unwavering faith, Barbara wholeheartedly served alongside her husband, the Rev. Charles “Popeye” Harness, as a devoted pastor’s wife for many years. She was a longtime member of Island Ford Baptist Church, where she demonstrated her love for Christ through kindness, service and prayer.

Born Sept. 23, 1936, she was preceded in death by her husband; her parents, Gid and Mattie Golden; her in-laws, Elmer and Ruby Harness; siblings, Earl Golden, Roy (Jessie) Golden, Inez (Glenn) Foust, Betty Jo (Kenneth) Raines, Thelma (Willard) Melton, Bernice (Boyd) Walker, Arnold Golden and Wanda Lou Golden; brother-in-law, Rex DeVoe; and son-in-law, Greg Davis.

Barbara is survived by her children, Teresa (Jerry) Farmer and Wesley (Ginger) Harness; grandchildren, Joshua Davis, Haylea Bates, Alyssa (Kerry) Grimes, Tanner (Katherine) Harness, Sydney (Noah) Patterson, Maggie Harness, Jonas Harness and Sami Harness; and great-grandchildren, Braxton, Bentlee, Blue, Bear, Bennett, Briar, Blake, Allison, Ezra, Avery and Hailey.

She is also survived by her loving sister-in-law, Clara “Tootsie” DeVoe; Judy Golden; her much loved church family; and many cherished extended family members.

Though Barbara held many roles in her life, her greatest joy came from being Mom and Mamaw, which she embraced with great joy and devotion. Her life was a testimony of God’s grace, and her legacy will continue through the generations she loved so deeply.

The family received friends from 5 to 7 p.m. Tuesday, Jan. 6, at Holley Gamble Funeral Home in Clinton. The funeral followed in the chapel. Officiating were her great-grandson, Braxton Bates, and the Rev. Randy Norton.

Family and friends will meet at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday, Jan. 7, at the funeral home to go in procession to Hillvale Baptist Church Cemetery for an 11 a.m. graveside service.

Pallbearers will be Joshua Davis, Tanner Harness, Jonas Harness, Braxton Bates, Blue Bates, Kerry Grimes, Bennett Grimes, Briar Grimes and Noah Patterson.

Holley Gamble Funeral Home in Clinton is in charge of arrangements.
