BETTY J. BOYD (WORD)

Betty J. Boyd (Word), 82, passed away Wednesday May 22, 2019, at her residence.

She was born Aug. 8, 1936, in Coal Creek to the late Charles Word and Ida Belle Word (Lindsay). She was a long-standing member of Main Street Baptist Church in Rocky Top. She lived in Toledo, Ohio, for 30 years and 52 years in Lake City. She worked at Metcraft, Rite Aid in Toledo, and as a CNA in Toledo and Lake City for nursing homes for many years. She loved Football and Basketball and especially the Tennessee Lady Vols. She was very active with her great-grandchildren, Austin Boyd and Alex Boyd, that she was raising, plus all their friends. They all called her, “Grandma.” She loved cats and her beloved dog, Princess.

Betty was preceeded in death by: Parents, Charles Word, Ida Belle Word (Lindsay); sons, Dee Dee Boyd and Terry Boyd; ex-husband, Billie Jack Boyd.

Survived by: Sister, Maggie S. Lively; daughter-in-Law, Vickie Boyd; grandchildren, Billie Boyd and Nichole Boyd; great-grandchildren, Austin Boyd, Amber Sexton and Alex Boyd; and nephew, Michael Lively and wife Melissa Lively.

WILLIAM TRAVIS WILDER

William Travis Wilder, better known as, “Travis,” 33, Clinton, passed away Tuesday, May 21, 2019, in Knoxville.

Travis was proud of his family and they all were very important to him.

Travis was preceded in death by: Father, Donald Wilder; and brother, Brandon Wilder.

He is survived by: Aunt and uncle, Peggy and Dennis Cornett, whom he called his Mam and Pop of Clinton; daughter, Lilly; brothers, Ron Wilder and wife Cortney of Harlan, Ky., and their children, Kylie, Garrett, and Gibson, Justin Wilder of Maynardville, and his children, Evan, Chelsea, and Tate, Wesley

Wilder of Clinton, and Christopher Wilder of Maynardville; and sister, Dawn Middleton and husband James of Kentucky; and a host of other relatives and friends.

Travis’s family will have a memorial service for him at a later date and will be announced by Jones Mortuary.

RONALD (RONNIE) KIRKLEY RICHARDS SR.

Ronald (Ronnie) Kirkley Richards Sr., 75, Madisonville, Texas was called home Sunday, May 19, 2019.

Ron was born June 15, 1943, in Tuscaloosa, Ala. He was a long-time resident of Lake City, and graduated Class of 62. He was the son of Bob and Polly Richards. Following in his family’s tradition of military service, Ron joined the Navy becoming a Hospital Corpsman 3rd Class with the Fleet Marine Forces.

Ron was a devoted husband, father, and doting grandfather, who enjoyed retired life, working in the yard, and being with his grandchildren. Ron was retired from MD Anderson. He volunteered with Scouts, HLSR, 1st EMS and The American Legion. He always said, "It is a way to give back for the many blessings I have been given."

Ron was preceded in death by: Father; mother; son, Kirk Jr.; and adoptive dad, Bob Richards.

He is survived by: Loving wife of 49 years, Delores Mott Richards of Madisonville, Texas; mother-in-law, Pauline Mott of Houston, Texas; brother, Brad Richards of Alvin, Texas; son and daughter-in-law, Kirk and Amey Richards of Woodstock, Ga.; daughter and son-in-law, Michaelle and Gene Whitesides of Madisonville, Texas; grandchildren, Barret and Morgan Whitesides, Noah and Cosette Richards; several in-laws, nieces, nephews, and an abundance of extended family and friends.

Funeral Service was held at Jeter Memorial Funeral Home in Friendswood, Texas.

His final resting place will be Houston National Cemetery.

JERRY LYNN STOOKSBURY

Jerry Lynn Stooksbury, 77, passed away Friday, May 17, 2019, at his home in Chandler, Ariz.

He was born Jan. 9, 1942, in Lake City, the son of late Bill and Ruthie Stooksbury. He was the oldest of four siblings.

Jerry graduated from Lake City High School in 1960 and went on to serve four years in the United States Air Force. He later retired from Honeywell. Jerry enjoyed cooking, eating, singing, and watching a good western. He adored his two puppies, Elvis and Zoe.

He is survived by: Daughter, Sheri Deal of Arizona; and his son and daughter-in-law, Mike and Marcy Stooksbury of Oregon; grandchildren, Brandon Martin Aldecoa, Chase Warren Deal, Cole William Deal, Bryce Alexander Hudson Stooksbury, and Casey Erika Stooksbury; sister and brother-in-law, Gail and Jim Burnette; brother and sister-in-law, Maurice and Carolyn Stooksbury; brother, Mike Stooksbury.

He is preceded in death by his wife, Darlene; and his grandparents, Fletcher and Ethel Parrott.

A service will be held at Norris Memorial Gardens at 10 a.m. June 22, 2019.

ROBERT (BOB) JAMES HAMBY

Robert (Bob) James Hamby, 82, Clinton, crossed over from this life Sunday, May 12, 2019, at his home.

He was born June 3, 1936, in Cumberland County. He was a graduate of Rockwood High School, Class of 1954. After working 16 years at First National Bank in Roane County, Bob spent the last 50 years with State Farm Insurance and was planning to retire in October. He loved his home place of Hebbertsburg, Tenn., and enjoyed spending time in Perdido Key, Fla. Bob never met a stranger and was an avid storyteller. He traveled the world and lived a full, happy life. He was a long-time member and Deacon of Clinton Church of Christ.

Preceded in death by: Parents, Clifford and Ida Hamby; and sisters, Jeanette Hamby and June Breninger.

Survivors include: Loving wife, Karen Medlock Hamby; sister, Geneva (Andy) Higginbotham of Knoxville; brother-in-law, Lonnie Breninger of Gresham, Ore., and brother-in-law Jack (Bobbie) Howsare of Virginia Beach, Va.; sister-in-law, Judy Cate Brown of Rex, Ga.; first wife, Derita Steele of Knoxville; daughters, Lisa Bullock of Clinton, Amy Hamby-Scott (Don) of Knoxville, and Melissa Dupree of Clinton.

He was very close to grandson Zach Bullock, whom he worked with every day. He is also survived by grandchildren, Lindsey (Jake) Lowe, Laken Scott, Donovan Scott, Emily (Brandon) Ingram, Faith Dupree, Cameron Dupree, Addison Dupree; and great-grandchildren, Makyla, Jaxon, and Hudson Lowe.

The receiving friends will be held at 5 p.m. Thursday, May 16, 2019, at Holley Gamble Funeral Home, Clinton, with funeral following at 7 p.m., Richard Bentley officiating. Interment will be at Grandview Memorial Garden at 10 a.m. Friday, May 17, 2019.

HONROABLE JAMES B. 'BUDDY' SCOTT

The Honorable James B. “Buddy” Scott, Jr., age 83, Oak Ridge, passed away on Thursday, May 9, 2019.

Judge Scott became the Anderson County Circuit and Criminal Court Judge in 1978 and was re-elected every election thereafter until retirement in 2005.

Prior to becoming Judge, he served as the Assistant District Attorney General for Roane, Loudon, Blount, Meigs, and Morgan Counties. In 1971, he was elected as a delegate to the State Constitutional Convention representing Roane and Anderson Counties, where he became chairman of the drafting committee responsible for writing the amendment to the Tennessee Constitution on taxation. In 1973, he became the Assistant District Attorney for Anderson, Scott, Campbell, Union, Fentress, and Claiborne Counties. In 1976 he was elected District Attorney General for the Seventh Judicial District which consisted solely of Anderson County. While Attorney General, he was instrumental in the passage of Tennessee’s vehicular homicide law.

He served as Chairman of the Board of Directors for the Museum of Appalachia and was Chairman of the Committee of Governmental Affairs for the Anderson County Chamber of Commerce.

He was born in Charleston, W. VA., on Nov. 7, 1935, the son of James Beveridge and Mary Ann Scott. He moved to Oak Ridge at the age of eight and graduated from Oak Ridge High School in 1954. Following high school, he began college at The University of Tennessee after receiving a football scholarship. He graduated from The University of Tennessee School of Law in 1965.

He is survived by: Wife, Mildred Kidwell Scott of Oak Ridge; son, James K. “Jim” Scott of Knoxville, and his two sons Jack and Sam Scott; daughter, Dana Pemberton (Judge Mike Pemberton) of Rockwood, and their son Michael Pemberton; and daughter, Annie Duncan (Jeremy Duncan) of Knoxville, and their daughter Drew Duncan and son John Duncan.

He is also survived by his sister, Frances Crisp, and many nieces and nephews.

He was predeceased by: Parents; sister, Sally Josenhans; and an infant sister.

The family will receive friends from 5 – 7 p.m. Thursday, May 16, 2019, at Weatherford Mortuary in Oak Ridge.

The funeral will follow with Dr. Larry Blakeburn officiating.

Burial will occur at 11 a.m. Friday, May 17, 2019, at Lawnville Cemetery, located next to Young’s Chapel Cumberland Presbyterian Church, 1705 Lawnville Road, Kingston.

SAMUEL DALE DEAN

Samuel Dale Dean, Pastor Emeritus at First Baptist Church in Clinton, passed away peacefully Thursday, May 9, 2019, at the age of 77.

He was born in Mosheim in 1941 to Bonnie and James Dean where he was one of five siblings: Mildred, Thelma, Irene, and Don. He graduated from Chuckey Doak High School’s first graduating class in Greeneville, where he was named Mr. Doak his senior year. He continued his education at Tusculum College and Southern Seminary where he obtained a B.S. in psychology and a Masters of Divinity. He served more than 50 years in the ministry at several churches including Mountain View Baptist in Greeneville, Central Baptist in Johnson City, First Baptist Church in Jonesboro, and First Baptist Church in Clinton. After his retirement, he served as interim pastor at First Baptist Church in Etowah, and Cumberland Baptist Church in Knoxville.

He is survived by: Wife of 52 years, Marie Allen Dean; children, Chris Dean, and his wife Alicia, from Lilburn, Ga., and Kelly Johnson, and her husband Scott from Knoxville; grandchildren, Kayla Cantrell, Madison Dean, Cameron Dean from Lilburn Ga., Jordan Mancini and her husband Jake from Savannah, Ga., Mallory O’Brien and her husband Andrew from Knoxville, and Andrew Johnson from Knoxville; great-grandchild, Aubree Cantrell from Lilburn, Ga.; and his brother Don and his wife Sharon from Greeneville.

Sam Dean was well-known for his compassion, sense of humor, intelligence, and ability to minister in a unique way that touched many lives in the communities in which he served. He was a true advocate for education as he served as Chairman of the Board for Carson-Newman University and many local education committees.

The family would like to thank the ICU staff at Memorial Methodist Hospital for the compassionate, angelic care they provided during this difficult time.

The family will receive friends from 4 – 7 p.m. Saturday, May 11, 2019, at First Baptist Church in Clinton with a Celebration of Life service to follow.

The graveside will be 2 p.m. Sunday, May 12, 2019, at Grandview Memorial Gardens in Clinton.

BENJAMIN KANIPES

Benjamin Kanipes, 79, of the Marlow Community, passed away Wednesday, May 8, 2019.

He was born April 25, 1940, in the Marlow Community. He was an Army Veteran stationed in Germany and worked as a welder for Plumbers and Pipefitters Union Local #189 for more than 40 years in Ohio. Benjamin lived in Starke, Fla., for 10 years before moving back to East Tennessee.

He was preceded in death by: Parents, Frank and Maxie Kanipes; son, Johnny Kanipes; sister and brother-in-law, Mary and Fate Harper.

Survivors include: Children, John Kohler, Stacy Kanipes, Benjamin Kanipes Jr., Penny Kanipes, Marty Kanipes, Jason Kanipes, Cheyanne Kanipes, and Dakota Kanipes; step-daughter, Janie Milliken; grandchildren, Jaxsen, Maddox, and Mikayla Kanipes, Pam Kohler, and John Kohler Jr.; great-grandchildren, Isaiah Kohler, Sabrina and Sean Hicks, Paul and Ben Kohler.

A visitation will be held from 6 – 8 p.m. Saturday, June 15, 2019, at Premier Sharp Funeral Home.
