Hubert Allen Sherwood, 80, passed away Wednesday, Jan. 11, 2023.
He was born in Oak Ridge on Feb. 9, 1942, to Lonnie and Elizabeth Gilmore Sherwood. Allen was a member of Second Baptist Church of Clinton. He retired from Rexnord and enjoyed farming.
In addition to his parents, Allen is preceded in death by a brother, Danny Sherwood.
Survived by: Loving wife of 52 years, Mary Sherwood; children, Sharon Buck (Billy), Karen Nelson (Terry Kennedy), and Matthew Sherwood (Candace); grandchildren, Samantha Nelson (Matthew Thacker), Leaha Nelson (Aaron Talley), Madelynn Sherwood and Connor Sherwood; great-grandchildren, Acen Talley, Ryden Talley and Eden Berry; siblings, Irma Wright, Shirley Murray, Mack Sherwood (Margaret), Judy Thacker and Irene White
The family held a graveside service at 11:30 a.m. Saturday, Jan. 14, 2023, at Grandview Memorial Garden with Dr. Michael Thompson and the Rev. Gary Swaggerty officiating.

THOMAS SCOTT KEITH

Thomas Scott Keith was born Feb. 18, 1959, to Carl and Virginia Keith.
Scott grew up in Clinton. Those that knew Scott knew his true passions were flying, the University of Tennessee athletics, and his family. He was a proud Volunteer who earned a bachelor's degree in civil engineering. His proudest career accomplishment was his role as Chief Pilot for Team Health. His years there allowed him to do what he loved with those he loved. He made many friends and developed lifelong relationships that he always cherished. During his time there he also met the love of his life; Melissa Keith.
He leaves behind: Loving wife, Melissa Keith; son, Adam Barringer; brother, Jim Keith; and sister, Susan Keith; aunts and uncles and numerous nieces and nephews.
He also leaves behind his lifelong best friend, Steve Forbes.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Carl and Virginia.
Scott was a proud cancer survivor of more than 25 years. He lit up the room and was always ready to tell you a story. And they were always told with enthusiasm and gusto. In the end, he didn't lose his fight to cancer and he told Melissa, “I hope I don't die of something boring.”
Well my dear, my you didn't. You shocked us all in the end just as you would like. Your final flight departed at 9:04 a.m., Jan. 10, 2023.

MONSIGNOR WILLIAM HASSETT GAHAGAN

Monsignor William H. Gahagan, a much beloved priest who faithfully served God’s people in Middle and East Tennessee for 52 years, died Jan. 10, 2023. He was 85-years old.
Born in Lewiston, Maine, in 1937, he graduated from Lewiston High School in 1955 and enlisted in the U.S. Air Force. Having served overseas in France, he providentially received orders to Tennessee to Joelton Air Force Station, north of Nashville. Tennessee may have seemed as foreign as France to this Maine native, but it was God’s way of introducing him to his new home state where He had big plans for him.
When God calls, he knew there was only one way to respond — “Be it done to me according to your Word” (Luke 1: 38). And that’s exactly what Monsignor Bill did throughout his priestly life. His abandonment to God’s Will would take him on a journey of college and seminary formation that would eventually lead him to the altar in 1970 where his, “yes,” to God was consecrated in his ordination as a priest of the Diocese of Nashville, which at the time represented the entire state of Tennessee. Given his parish assignments within East Tennessee, he continued to serve under the newly established Diocese of Knoxville, which was decreed by St. John Paul II in 1988.
Early recognized for his great commitment to serving the poor and needy in East Tennessee, he was appointed in 1989 to be the “Vicar of Charities” for the Diocese of Knoxville. Having previously established “Catholic Social Services” and “Columbus Home” in Knoxville, he helped create the umbrella program for what would later become “Catholic Charities of East Tennessee.” Given his many labors of love for the poor and needy, he is considered the “father” of Catholic charity work in East Tennessee.
Because his parish assignments spanned the geographic area of East Tennessee over his many decades of priestly ministry, his reputation for pastoral ministry and help to the wider communities in which he lived was widely known. It was said of him that if you were troubled in spirit or in need of any help, his door was the first you should knock upon. And he was always there for his brother priests who he loved so much. His joyful demeaner coupled with his self-deprecating style of humor earned the title of the “Rodney Dangerfield of priests,” which always put people at ease who came to him with their worries and crosses.
With a special gift as a caring “spiritual director,” he served as a chaplain to the students and faculty of Knoxville Catholic High School, and to the Catholic Center of East Tennessee State University. He also served in a part-time capacity at the Jesuit House of Prayer in Hot Springs, N.C., as a spiritual director. Monsignor Bill also had a special love and desire to minister to the sick and suffering, serving as a chaplain in the area hospitals of his many assignments, particularly at St. Mary’s Hospital in Knoxville, as well as in Johnson City and Nashville. In 2017, the honorific title of “Monsignor” was bestowed upon him as a “Chaplain to His Holiness” as a member of the Papal Household in recognition of his steadfast and loving service to the Church and her faithful, and to the poor and suffering.
His many assignments during 52 years include serving at the Cathedral of the Incarnation and Christ the King in Nashville, as a teacher and chaplain at Knoxville Catholic High School, director of then-Knoxville Catholic Charities, as well as serving as pastor or associate pastor of St. Therese in Clinton and St. Joseph in Norris, Our Lady of Perpetual Help in LaFollette, vocations director for the Knoxville Deanery (when a part of the Diocese of Nashville), St. Dominic Church in Kingsport, St. Mary Church in Johnson City, and St. Therese of Lisieux Church in Cleveland.
Though a priest never truly “retires” from the priesthood, Monsignor Bill was eager to continue to serve in any capacity called upon, and he continued to do so even as his health declined. And all who had the blessing to know him knew he had an incredible gift of fortitude, for he was very determined to do his utmost to be the priest God called him to be, and to do whatever he could for others. Truly, he was the face, the arms and the heart of Jesus to all who came to him.
Monsignor Bill was preceded in death by: Parents, John and Winifred Kerns Gahagan; brothers, Sonny and Jim Gahagan; and sister, Mary Fournier.
He is survived by: Nephew, Michael Fournier Sr.; niece, Linda Doyon; great-nephews, Michael Fournier Jr. and Michael Derosier; and great-niece, Cathy Derosier.
The visitation for Monsignor Gahagan will be from 5 – 7 p.m. Monday, Jan. 16, 2023, at St. Joseph Church in Norris.
A second visitation will take place at the Cathedral of the Most Sacred Heart of Jesus in Knoxville at 10 a.m. Tuesday, Jan. 17, 2023. The funeral Mass will follow at 11:30 a.m. with Bishop Richard Stika celebrating and will be live-streamed on the cathedral's YouTube channel: www.youtube.com/@shcathedral.

ANNA LOU MASSENGILL

Anna Lou Massengill, 84, Rocky Top, passed away Monday, Jan. 10, 2023, at her home.
She was born March 5, 1938, in Jellico to Thorn and Bessie Singleton Housley. She worked for more than 40 years at Oak Ridge Sporting Goods. Anna Lou was known to collect dolls and had more than 800 in her home. She enjoyed going to yard sales and thrift stores and also liked to camp with her husband when they were younger. She loved her family dearly and was a beloved member of Willowbrook Baptist Church. She will be dearly missed by all who knew her.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by: Husband, Bob Massengill; son, Paul Ray Massengill; grandson, James Ray Hunley; and brother, Boby Joe Housley.
She is survived by: Children, Deborah Napier and husband Mike, Melissa Hunley and husband James; brother, John Robert Housley; grandchildren, Chasity Wilkerson (Larry), DeAnna Lane (Ben), Brittany Carden (Jeremy), KayLee Hunley, Bobby Hunley, John Napier, and Andrew Napier (Brittany); great-grandchildren, Jordan, Brooklyn, J.J., and Lizzie; several nieces, nephews and other family and friends.
The family received friends at the Leach Family Funeral Home and Cremation from 5 – 7 p.m. Thursday, Jan. 12, 2023, with the funeral service following at 7 p.m. with Pastor Roger Leach and the Rev. Jason Lowe officiating.
Graveside service was held at 11 a.m. Friday, Jan. 13, 2023, at Oak Grove Cemetery.

PATRICIA 'TRISH' CARPENTER

Patricia ‘Trish’ Carpenter, 54, Clinton, left this world unexpectedly, Jan. 9, 2023.
She was born to Dianne Walden, and Walter ‘Buddy’ Walden, Oct. 18, 1968.
Trish was known to make the best sweet tea and was a great cook. She loved reading and working puzzles with her ‘Mommy Dear.’ Trish loved camping and caving with her husband and children. She was a very supportive, giving person and never saw the fault in others. Trish was looking forward to the birth of her great-grandson.
Trish wass preceded in death by: Father, Walter (Buddy) Walden; father-in-law, David Carpenter; three children she never got to hold in this world; and grandparents.
She is survived by: Husband, Otis (Buggsy) Carpenter of Clinton; daughter, Jessica Carpenter and her children Johnny, Hailey, Casey and Cody; son, Billy Carpenter and his children Davey and Noah all of Solway; mother, Dianne Walden of Clinton; mother-in-law, Vickie Carpenter; sisters, Melissa Davis (Michael) of Clinton, Sheila Langford (Robert) of Clinton, Cheryl King of Clinton, and Amy Walden Duncan (Slick Rick) of Solway; brothes-in-law, James Darren Messamore (Tina), and Larry Carpenter; sisters-in-law, Nancy ‘Sissy’ Messamore and Margie Carpenter; and lots of nieces and nephews.
Services were held Saturday, Jan. 14, 2023, at Mott-McKamey Funeral Home and Cremations.

Bruce Thomas Carden, 73, Lake City, passed away Jan. 9, 2023, at his residence.
He was born Aug. 3, 1949, to Zelmer Carden and Della Thompson Carden. Bruce is of the Baptist faith and a deacon and trustee of his church. He loved four wheeling along with fishing.
Bruce was preceded in death by: Parents, Zelmer and Della Thompson Carden; brothers, Glenith Carden, Junior Carden, Leonard Carden; sisters, Reba Daniels, Betty Jo Beach, and Louise Harlas; and sister-in-law, Gaye Carden.
He is survived by: Wife of 55years, Nancy Duncan Carden of Lake City; son, Thomas Lynn Carden and wife Elaine of Caryville; brother, Ellis Carden of Clinton; sister-in-law, Brenda Duncan Wilson; grandchildren, Ashley, Kay Ann, Matthew, Emily; great-grandchildren, Shirley May, Sophia, James; a host of other nieces, nephews, relatives and friends.
Visitation was from 1 – 2 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 14, 2023, at the Hatmaker Funeral Home Chapel.

James Robert Altum, 50, Clinton, passed away unexpectedly at Methodist Medical Center of Oak Ridge, Saturday, Jan. 7, 2023.
James was full of life and personality, and he was loved by many. He was a talented guitarist, but above all he deeply loved his children. James will be remembered as a warm and welcoming person who had a great sense of humor.
He was preceded in death by: Mother, Patricia Jane Altum; wife, Kimberly Suzanne Altum; brother, Cecil Edward Altum.
James is survived by: Father, Robert Lee Altum; son, Caleb Nathaniel Altum of Knoxville; daughter, Gabrielle Altum of Knoxville; brother, Bobby Ray Altum of Clinton; sister, Wendy Bishop and husband Eddie of Oak Ridge; nieces, Emily and Caitlin Roberts; nephews, Steven and Timothy Altum; best friends, Jamie Beach, Tommy Vanhuss, and Gene Toney; special friend, Krystal Collins.
The family will receive friends in the Chapel of Jones Mortuary from 6 – 8 p.m. Monday, Jan. 16, 2023.
His memorial service will begin at 8 p.m. with the Rev. Jim Ault officiating.

ACE JOHN CARROLL JR.

Peacefully and surrounded by his family, Ace John Carroll Jr., passed away Jan. 7, 2023, at the age of 68.
Ace grew up in Clinton and proudly served his country in the U.S. Navy. After his years of service, he followed in his father’s footsteps by working in the HVAC industry, a field where he later became a known expert and worked for more than 50 years. No matter if it was peers in his line of work or his customers, he never hesitated to help others if called upon.
Ace enjoyed life, his family, and many friends. He loved good food, a good fishing spot, and trying to grow a good garden. He was adored and loved by all who knew him. He had a heart of gold, and his kindness knew no bounds.
Ace is survived and missed beyond measure by: Loving wife of 30 years, Carol.
He is forever cherished by: Three sons, Colton Carroll (Haley Burnett), Brandon Carroll (Jenna), and Ace John Carroll III (Heather), and daughter, Misty Brown (David); grandchildren, Darby, Tom, Jake, Mollie, Maggie, Grayson, A.J., and Conner; as well as brothers, Dusty Carroll (Paula) and George Carroll (Debra) and their families.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Evelyn and Ace John Carroll Sr.
The family will receive friends from 1 – 3 p.m. Sunday, Jan. 15, 2023, at Holley-Gamble Funeral Home in Clinton.
