HOWARD N. CHESBRO

Howard N. Chesbro, 89, Clinton, passed away from cancer May 1, 2021, at the Water’s Nursing Home in Clinton.

He was born on May 30, 1931, in Noank, Conn., to Leroy and Minnie Tanner Chesbro. Howard was a member of the Bethel Baptist Church in Clinton. He graduated from Robert E. Fitch High School in 1949 Groton, Conn., then enlisted in United States Air Force and served in Korea as a radio operator and continued as a missile tech for 16 years. He was employed by U.S. Naval Underwater Sound Laboratory in New London, Conn., as a surface ship sonar technician prior to retiring in 1986. Howard was single and member of Veterans of Foreign Wars and American Legion.His hobbies were puzzles and coloring. Howard resided recently at Meadow View Assisted Living in Clinton, prior to going to the nursing home.

In addition to his parents, Howard was preceded in death by: Sister-in-law, Mary Chesbro; and great-niece, Kristy N. Morgan.

Survived by: Brothers, Richard P. Chesbro, Leroy N. Chesbro and wife Nancy; nieces, Teresa Robinson, Pamela DiPasquale and Ronda G.Chesbro; several nieces and nephews and a host of other family and friend.

The family will receive friends from 3 – 5 p.m. Saturday, May 8, 2021, at Holley-Gamble Funeral Home in Clinton with the service to follow at 5 p.m. with the Dr. Darryl Taylor officiating.

HAZEL RUTH DABNEY

Hazel Ruth Dabney, 79, Oliver Springs, passed away, Saturday, May 1, 2021, at Methodist Medical Center of Oak Ridge.

Hazel was born Nov. 4, 1941, in Lafollette. She was a lifelong resident of this area. She enjoyed watching Pastor Garvan Walls of Mount Pisgah Baptist Church and listening to the choir of Beech Park Baptist Church. Hazel also enjoyed reading, crocheting, fishing, camping, and most importantly spending time with her family and grandkids.

She was preceded in death by: Mother and father, William and Mary Dabney; brothers, William Paul Dabney Sr., Robert Glenn Dabney Sr., and Raymond Dabney; sister, Mary Katherine Golden; by son-in-law, Fred Holbert; nephew, William Paul Dabney Jr.; friend, Lannie Phillips.

Hazel is survived by: Children, Gary Boshears (Wendy) of Frost Bottom, Barbara Holbert of Maryville, Michelle Loveday of Oliver Springs, and Kristi Loveday Dooley (Todd) of Clinton; step-sons, Chuck Wilson and Jim Wilson both of Clinton; by grandchildren, Jonathan Boshears, Amanda Seivers, Ashley Fairfield-Murr (Justin), Michael Nelson, Chelsey Avila (Carlos), Kelly Boshears, Holly Boshears, and Jacob Dooley; great-grandchildren, Colton Lambert, Connor Lambert, Corbin Lambert, Raigan Boshears, Sarah Boshears, Jeremiah Boshears, Kopelynn Boshears, Claudiea Boshears, Emerson Fox, Iris Murr, Layla Avila, and Legend Avila; sisters-in-law, Mary Katherine Dabney and Dorothy Dabney both of Clinton; sister, Connie Hightower; and a host of nieces, nephews, extended family and friends.

The family received friends from 5 – 7 p.m. Tuesday, May 4, 2021, at Premier Sharp Funeral Home in Oliver Springs.

The funeral followed at 7 p.m. in the funeral home chapel with Pastor Robbie Leach officiating.

Burial and graveside services will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday, May 5, 2021, at Anderson Memorial Gardens.

DONALD 'DON' WAYNE CALHOUN

Donald “Don” Wayne Calhoun, 78, Clinton passed away April 29, 2021.

Don was born in Kingsport July 5, 1943, to Echol Ellis and Emma Bell Lane Calhoun. After graduating from Blountville High School he attended Lincoln Memorial University, where he graduated with a degree in history. It was there that he met the love of his life, Margaret Ann Hammer. They married and shared 56 cherished years together.

A veteran of the U.S. Army, he began his career with Travelers Insurance in Knoxville prior to joining his wife’s family business, Hammer’s Department Store. He retired after 30-plus years with the business. An active member of the community, he coached youth baseball and basketball for many years. Some may remember Don from his days announcing high school basketball, baseball and football on WYSH radio for many years with Charlie Phillips.

He was also a Western movie enthusiast, and for many years he played “Deadwood Don” on the PBS show, “Riders of the Silver Screen.” He enjoyed spending time with his family and was a loving and devoted grandfather.

Don was preceded in death by: Wife, Margaret Ann Calhoun; father and mother, Echol Ellis and Emma Bell Lane Calhoun; brother, Edgar Calhoun; sister, Edith Hayter; brother-in-law, Don Latture; and brother-in-law, Jeff Hammer.

He is survived by: Son and daughter-in-law, Kelly and Tanya Calhoun; grandsons, Harrison and Matthew Calhoun; brother, Glen Calhoun and his wife Kay; sister, Betty Latture; brother-in-law, Roy Hayter; sister-in-law, Billie Calhoun; sister-in-law, Billie Sue Hammer; many nieces and nephews; and special friends, Alvin and Diane Taylor.

The family held a graveside service at 11 a.m. Monday, May 3, 2021, at Grandview Memorial Garden in Clinton with Pastor Mike Thompson officiating.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Second Baptist Church, 777 Public Safety Lane, Clinton, TN, 37716.

LILLIAN 'JEAN' HAYNES

Lillian “Jean” Haynes, 84, Powell, passed away at her home April 29, 2021.

Jean worked in the Quality Control Division of Amendt Milling Company. She was a member of Covenant Life Church. She enjoyed being involved in church groups and activities including the Kitchen Team and the Ladies Auxiliary. Jean was a great cook. Jean loved her family and spending time with them.

She was preceded in death by: Father, Sam Carson Mabe, and mother, Minnie Pope Mabe.

She was also preceded in death by: Brother, Charles Mabe; sisters, Betty Lindsay, Florence Treece, and Mary Lanham.

Jean is survived by: Husband, Jerry C. Haynes of Powell; son, Robert (Bob) Haynes (Linda) of Chattanooga; daughter, Cyndi McAfee (Tony) of Andersonville; sister, Brenda Ratliff of Indiana; grandchildren, Jody Yother (Josh), McKenzie Sneij (Eli), Mariah Sweat (Wesley); great-grandchildren, Alexis Yother, Madison Yother, Peyton Yother, Mila Sneij, Selah Mac Sneij.

The family received her friends from 3 – 4:30 p.m. Sunday, May 2, 2021, at Covenant Life Church, 151 Sycamore Place, Clinton.

The celebration of Jean’s life immediately followed with Pastor Tony McAfee officiating.

Her Interment began at 5:30 p.m., May 2, 2021, at Norris Memorial Gardens, following the celebration of life.

ANNA LOU COOK

Anna Lou Cook, 84, Lake City, passed away peacefully to be home with the Lord April 28, 2021, at her residence.

She was born Sept. 16, 1936, to the late Courtland Tindell and Della Phillips. She attended Light House Church of God. Anna quit work to take care of children. She loved children and taking care of people, most of all making people smile. There was a twinkle in her eyes that would light up a room. She loved nature, beautiful colors, and was a peace maker. She loved her family, friends, Church, and most of all God. Anna was a wonderful wife, mother, and grandmother. She'll be forever missed and never forgotten. We love you... mom, granny, family, and friends.

Anna was preceded in death by: Parents; husband, Paul A. Cook; son, Charles K. Cook; granddaughter, Laurel Cook; and several brothers and sisters.

She is survived by: Son, Paul Cook Jr. and Reba, Knoxville; daughter, Andrea Schyma and Rodney Schyma of Lake City; sisters, Susie Sexton of Lake City, Willma Bertram of Sunbright; grandchildren, Amanda McCoy, Alisha McCoy, Laurel Cook, Ashley Rains, Robert Cook; great-grandchildren, Joshua Golden, Hailey McCoy, Courtland Golden, Leland Daugherty, and Kavin Bolton; a host of other family and friends.

Visitation was held from 6 – 7 p.m. Monday, May 3, 2021, in the Hatmaker Funeral Home Chapel in Lake City.

Funeral service was at 7 p.m. Monday, May 3, 2021, in the Hatmaker Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Gordon Bertram officiating.

Tuesday May 4, 2021 Family and friends met 11:15 a.m. Tuesday, May 4, 2021, at Hatmaker Funeral Home to go in procession for a noon burial at the Foust Cemetery in Lake City.

NAOMI BROOKS RIGGS

Naomi Brooks Riggs, 88, went home to be with the Lord April 28, 2021.

Naomi was born April 10, 1933, in Heiskell to Robbie and Eula Fraker Brooks.

In addition to her parents, Naomi was preceded in death by: Husband, Thomas “T.J.” Riggs; son, Mark Riggs; sister, Helen Brooks; brother, Melvin “Gene” Brooks.

She is survived by: Daughter, Linda (Carlos) Crawford; son, Tommy (Connie) Riggs; grandchildren, Bobby (Morgan) Crawford, Amanda (Bob) Stokes, T.J. Riggs and Travis Riggs; great-grandchildren, Ethan and Emma Bolton, Caroline and Lauren Crawford, John and Maggie Stokes.

Special thanks to Covenant Hospice for their excellent love and care especially Mariann and Rebecca.

Family and friends called at their convenience between noon – 4 p.m. Saturday, May 1, 2021, at Holley-Gamble Funeral Home.

NELLIE SUE LAWSON

Nellie Sue Lawson, 76, Rocky Top, passed away Tuesday, April 27, 2021, at her home.

She was born Feb. 11, 1945, to Bufford and Margaret Golden Leinart in Briceville. She was a loving mother and grandmother who loved to take care of people. She will be dearly missed.

In addition to her parents, she is preceded in death by: Husband, Howard Lawson; and son, Stephen Lawson.

She is survived by: Children, Kathy Disney, Linda Gilley (Donald), Timothy Lawson (Darlene); siblings, Charles Leinart, Avery Leinart, Nora Leinart, James Leinart (Joyce), Phillip Leinart (Kathy), Dennis Leinart (Mary), Vickie Burris (Albert), and Lynn Leinart; grandchildren, Crystal Daugherty (Travis), Paul Burris, Felicia Rutherford, Marcus Gray (Courtney), Timothy Lawson (Rachel), Miranda Rutherford, Dalton Hatmaker, Emily Perkins, and Alley Hatmaker; great-grandchildren, Emily Burris, Tanner Daugherty, Madison Daugherty, Chevy Burris, Hailey Burris, Leah Lawson, Bryson Smith, Chloe Smith, Anna Lou Disney; and an already loved great-great-grandchild on the way, Everleigh Grace Daugherty.

A memorial service will be held at 6 p.m. Friday, May 7, 2021, at Methodist Community Church in Briceville with the Rev. Steve Seivers officiating.

MOSS BEETS

Rev. Moss Beets, 80, Clinton, passed away Tuesday, April 27, 2021.

He was born in Anderson County to Moss L. Beets and Nina Beets on July 18, 1940. Moss was a member of Farmers Grove Baptist Church. He pastored several churches in Ohio and East Tennessee.

He was preceded in death by: Parents; and wife of nearly 60 years, Lucille Beets.

He was also preceded in death by several brothers and sisters.

He leaves behind: Sons, Larry Beets and wife Rosetta, and Jerry Beets and wife Linda; daughter, Brenda Brown and husband Brian; two grandchildren, Karlee and Eli Beets; as well as two siblings.

The family received friends from 1 – 2 p.m. Thursday, April 29, 2021, at Holley Gamble Funeral Home.

His graveside followed at Grandview Memorial Garden with the Rev. Jimmy Ault officiating.
