Mavs drop opener to Carter

The Anderson County Mavericks opened the 2017 season with a 4-3 loss to visiting Carter.

The Mavericks scored a run in the bottom of the first and held a 1-0 lead until the bottom of the third when they tacked on two runs to lead 3-0.

The Hornets rallied for four runs in the top of the fourth to take a 4-3 lead. Their pitching made it stand the rest of the way as they held Anderson County bats to just three hits.

Denver Hubbard went 1-2 with a triple, an RBI, a walk, and a run scored. Zak Meyers was 1-3 with a double and an RBI while Trey Noe went 1-3 with an RBI.

Chase Elkins took the loss as he went three and a third, surrendering two earned runs on five hits with three strikeouts and three walks.

On Friday, the Mavericks open play in the Smoky Mountain Classic. They will face Lebanon at Gatlinburg-Pittman at 2 p.m. and Cherokee, also at Gatlinburg-Pittman, at 4:30 p.m.

On Saturday they will play Seymour at Seymour at 9 a.m. and Warren County at Seymour at 11:30 a.m.

Anderson County will host Knox Central on Monday at 5:30 p.m. They visit Central on Tuesday at 5:30 p.m.
