Motivated by his faith in God and a passion for helping Anderson County’s youth, Herb Goben, was recognized by the Anderson County Board of Education for his tireless efforts in supporting the Anderson County High School Band.

Goben, an Anderson County resident, has put in 15 or more years of donating and supporting the band program.

Goben recently donated chairs to the band, a sound system to the choir program at ACHS, and paid all of the fees for the band’s winter guard.

He does it not for recognition, but for his faith. His deep commitment to education and helping others showed through when he spoke to the board.

“When I was a little boy I had a temper. I’d get mad at the drop of a hat, but then along the way I met Jesus. Jesus took my temper away and he gave me a love. A love I can’t even hardly handle. And I also learned that the Lord loves children, from 2 to 20. How can I do any less?” Goben said.

Since then Goben said he has tried to live his life helping others, particularly children.

“I don’t regret one minute of it. I’m glad the Lord has allowed me that chance. Thank you,” Goben humbly said.

“We’re thankful for the things you’ve done to help Anderson County Schools. Without your help some of the things we would have struggled with,” said Anderson County Director of Schools Tim Parrott.

Anderson County School Board member Dail Cantrell also commended Goben on his community service, and his humble acceptance of it.

“It is refreshing to see someone who gives the way it is intended to give--quietly, and without asking for one’s name to be attached to something. It’s giving just for the sake of giving. That’s the way the Lord instructs us to do. We all thank you for everything that you do for all of our children,” Cantrell said.
