Mavericks sweep Cougars

The Anderson County Mavericks bounced back from a loss at Karns Monday to get a regular season sweep of Campbell County later in the week.

The Mavs fell at Karns in five innings by a score of 11-0. They collected five hits but four errors behind starter Ryan Moog proved costly.

Moog took the loss as he went three and a third. He allowed six earned runs on seven hits.

Trey Noe, Caleb Wilhoit, Andy Fox, Chase Ekins, and Thomas Sexton each had a base hit.

“We didn’t field it. They only had three more hits than we did. That’s tells the story,” said Ben Downs, head coach of the Mavericks.

On Wednesday, Anderson County beat visiting Campbell County in five innings by a score of 10-0 behind a historic performance by Denver Hubbard, who hit for the cycle.

“I’ve never had a player do that. It was an exciting and fun to be part of that,” said Downs, who was awarded a plaque for his recent 200th win prior to the game.

In his first at bat, Hubbard tripled and doubled his second time up. His third at bat brought a single and in his final at bat, he hit a solo walk-off home run to end the game in the fifth inning.

He finished the game 4-4 with five RBI.

Chase Elkins shined on the mound as he went all five innings and allowed just hits while striking out seven in the shutout. He was 2-3 with an RBI at the plate.

“Chase pitched great and the defense made the plays,” Downs said.

Noe went 3-3 with a pair of doubles and two RBI while Sexton went 1-2 with an RBI.

The Mavericks traveled to Campbell County on Thursday and won 6-1.

Jackson Muncy was strong on the mound as he pitched five innings and allowed one run on six hits with six strikeouts. At the plate he went 2-4 with an RBI.

Hunter Melton picked up the save. He pitched two innings and struck out three.

Zeke Meyers went 3-4 with three doubles and an RBI while Hubbard was 1-3 with two RBI.

“Campbell County played better but Jackson [Muncy] had a great night and so did Zeke Meyers,” Downs said.

The Mavericks will host Powell on Wednesday at 5:30 p.m. and will visit Union County on Thursday.
