Lady Mavs top Clinton, Gibbs

The Anderson County Lady Mavericks downed visiting Clinton on Thursday night in three sets.

In the first set, the Lady Mavs led throughout as they built their lead to 17-10 over the young Dragons. They reeled off five more points to build the lead to 22-10 before closing out the first set with a 25-13 win.

Clinton looked like a different team in the second set as they either led or were tied with Anderson County through much of the set. The Dragons held a 26-25 lead when Lady Mavs’ Head Coach Jayme Smith took a time out.

A couple of minutes later, Clinton Head Coach Susan Zellner called a time out when Anderson County pulled ahead 27-26.

The Lady Mavs went on for a 28-26 win in the second set.

The set saw Anderson County dominate from pretty much start to finish. Leading 13-8, the Lady Mavs went on a 7-0 run to build a 20-8 lead. They took the set and match with a 25-14 win.

“This win puts us as number one seed in the district. We still have district matches to go but we’re in pretty good standing,” said Smith.

The Lady Mavs are unbeaten in district play.

“We came to life in the second set. They finally worked together and Abbie [Stinnett] was blocking almost everything. That got us fired up. We got close in that set but we got behind in the other sets and if we get five points behind it’s hard for us to come back. We’re young and we have inconsistent play. We’re just up and down right now,” said Zellner.

For Anderson County, senior Maddy Taylor finished with seven points, 15 kills, three blocks, and 10 digs.

Freshman Bailey Wilder had four points and eight kills.

For the Dragons, junior Abbie Stinnett had two points (one ace), four kills, and three blocks.

Senior Kindrix Bean had seven points (two aces) and one dig.

Emma Clevinger had five points, two kills, and one dig.

Madison Lambert had one point, one kill, 10 assists, and three digs.

On Tuesday, Anderson County traveled to Gibbs and won a district match in three sets by scores of 28-26, 25-21, and 25-18.

Freshman Morgan McMurray had five kills and three blocks for the Lady Mavs while teammate senior Emily Sparks had three kills and three blocks.

Anderson County will travel to Hardin Valley on Thursday. The freshmen play at 4:30 p.m., the JV at 5:30 p.m., and the varsity at 6:30 p.m.

On Friday and Saturday, they travel to Baylor/Soddy Daisy. Times are to be announced.
