Mavericks pound Purple Pounders

The Anderson County Mavericks won the Region 2-4A championship by a score of 47-0 at Chattanooga Central on Friday night.

On their first possession, the Mavericks went 57 yards in nine plays as Mason Phillips scored on a 17-yard run.

Chris Powell kicked the extra point to give Anderson County a 7-0 lead with 7:03 remaining in the first quarter.

The Mavericks defense forced a quick three and out. A short punt gave Anderson County the ball at the Purple Pounders 28-yard line.

One play later, quarterback Stanton Martin scored on a 28-yard run.

Powell added the extra point to give the Mavericks a 14-0 lead with 5:51 remaining in the first quarter.

Once again, the Anderson County defense held and the Mavericks took over on their own 44-yard line.

Eight plays later, Marquise Gallahar scored on a seven-yard run as he went over defenders into the end zone.

The extra point attempt was blocked but Anderson County led 20-0 with 1:56 left in the first quarter.

That wrapped up scoring for most of the rest of the half as the Mavericks kept the ball in Chattanooga Central territory.

Late in the second quarter, Anderson County put together a four-play, 40-yard drive that was capped by a six-yard touchdown pass from Martin to Dalton Wilson.

Powell kicked the PAT to extend the Mavericks’ lead to 27-0.

Shortly before the half, Anderson County took possession on its own 31-yard line. They went 69 yards in just three plays as Martin threw a 52-yard touchdown pas to Michael Carroll.

The two-point conversion attempt failed but the Mavericks led 33-0 at halftime.

In the second half, Anderson County put together a time consuming 10-play drive that went 74 yards. The drive ended with a 23-yard touchdown pass from Martin to Ryan Moog.

Powell added the extra point and the Mavericks extended their lead to 40-0 and put the game under a continuous clock.

The final score of the evening came at the 7:18 mark of the fourth quarter when Austin Elliot hauled in a 10-yard touchdown pass from Martin.

Powell kicked the extra point to make the final 47-0.

Martin finished the game 17-25 for 233 yards and four touchdowns. He also carried the ball seven times for 62 yards and a touchdown.

Phillips led the Mavericks on the ground with 88 yards and a touchdown on 12 carries.

Carroll led the team in receptions with five for 115 yards and a touchdown. He finished with 164 all-purpose yards.

For all of the offensive firepower, the Anderson County defense put on an impressive display.

The Mavericks recorded five sacks — one each by Moog (seven tackles), Gallahar (five tackles), Thomas Roberts (four tackles), Brandon Seidner, and Matthew Murphy.

Phillips had six tackles and Austin Dunsmore had an interception.

They held the Purple Pounders to just 56 yards rushing and only 90 yards of total offense.

The Mavericks (8-0, 4-0), now ranked second in the state behind Greenville, return to their road warrior ways on Friday when they make one last trip to Chattanooga this season. They will face East Hamiliton (3-5, 2-2).

Kick-off is set for 7:30 p.m. as Anderson County makes their push for the first perfect regular season in school history.
