Lady Senators open with win over Lady Hawks

The Norris Lady Senators opened the 2017-2018 basketball season with a 32-20 at Clinton last Thursday evening.

Both teams started slowly on the offensive as Norris took a 7-1 lead in the first quarter, with Kylee Alvis scoring five of those points for the Lady Senators.

The second quarter saw both squads pick up the pace as Sarah Burton started making baskets for the Lady Hawks. Clinton chipped away at the Norris lead and trailed 12-11 at halftime.

The Lady Hawks opened the third quarter with scores by Burton and Terrigan Giles pushed Clinton into a 15-12 lead.

Allie Ammon dropped in a pair of free throws and added a basket to give the Lady Senators the lead with 2:26 left in the third quarter.

Burton knocked down a free throw to tie the game at 16-16. After a couple of free throws returned the lead to Norris, the Lady Hawks’ Karleigh Kellepourey nailed a shot with 1.2 seconds left in the third quarter tie the game at 18-18.

As the fourth quarter opened the Lady Senators’ defense tightened. Their press forced several turnovers and they capitalized as Alvis, Ammon, Emily Varner, and Jayce Braden scored leading Norris on a 10-0 run to put the game away.

Clinton picked up only one basket in the fourth quarter but it was still a strong showing for the Lady Hawks against a very good Norris squad.

Clinton is in action this week at the Foothills Tip-Off Classic at Eagleton. The tournament runs through Nov. 5.

They return home on Thursday, Nov. 9 to face Horace Maynard Middle School at 6 p.m. The JV girls will play at 5 p.m.

The Lady Senators will host Lake City on Thursday at 6 p.m. and will visit Gresham on Monday at 4:45 p.m.
