Lady Hawks win
The Clinton Middle School Lady Hawks beat visiting Horace Maynard 31-22 on Thursday.
Sarah Burton led Clinton with a dominant performance. How dominant? She personally outscored the Lady Red Devils as she bucketed 23 points.
After HMMS went up 3-0 early in the first quarter, Sarah Newport scored to cut the score to 3-2. The Lady Red Devils upped their lead to 5-2 but Karleigh Kellepourey scored to make it a 5-4 game and Burton converted a traditional three-point play to put the Lady Hawks ahead 7-5 at the end of the first quarter.
Both teams settled down defensively in the second quarter as turnovers and missed shots haunted each team. Burton and Newport scored to help keep Clinton ahead as they went into halftime with a 13-11 lead.
The third quarter saw Burton take over as she led the Lady Hawks on runs of 8-2 and 8-2 to push the Clinton lead to 29-14.
The Lady Red Devils tried to claw back into the game as CMS Head Coach Kristen Land emptied her bench. Burton added a final basket with 1:16 remaining to stem a 6-2 HMMS run.
The Lady Hawks held on for the 31-22 win.
Clinton returns to action on Nov. 16 at Robertsville and will host Jacksboro on Nov. 20.
