Lady Mavs open with wins
The Anderson County Lady Mavericks opened the 2017-2018 basketball season with 44-27 win over visiting Loudon on Thursday evening.
The Lady Redskins rolled early as they opened on a 13-0 run and led 18-2 with less than a minute remaining in the first quarter.
A basket by Lady Mavs’ freshman Cameron Castleberry broke the Loudon run and Juliann Smith sank a shot for Anderson County near the end of the quarter.
The Lady Redskins opened the second quarter leading 18-4. Ashlynn Phillips, Maci Houser, and Callie Bowling scored for the Lady Mavs to cut into the Loudon lead and Smith knocked down a free throw near the end of the quarter.
While the Anderson County offense was continued to struggle in the second quarter, the defense came to life as they held the Lady Redskins to single point.
Loudon led 19-11 at the half.
In the third quarter the Lady Mavs’ offense came to life largely to the 3-point shooting of Houser. The junior nailed three consecutive treys from the corner to put Anderson County ahead by a score of 20-19.
They never relinquished the lead.
Brooklin McCoy scored and Houser hit a runner as the Lady Mavs’ defense again held the Lady Redskins to a single point in the quarter.
After three quarter, Anderson County led 25-20.
The Lady Mavs pulled away in the fourth quarter, outscoring Loudon 19-7 to pick up the win.
Houser led Anderson County with 18 points, including four 3-pointers.

On Saturday, the Lady Mavs won two games at home as they downed Greenback 49-42 and Union County 60-53.
Stats for those games were not available at press time.
The Lady Mavs return to action on Tuesday (Nov. 28) when they travel to Campbell County.
Tip-off is set for 6 p.m.
