Lady Mavs struggle to score

The Anderson County Lady Mavericks fell at Oak Ridge on Tuesday by a score of 59-21.

The Lady Mavs struggled on both ends of the floor in the first quarter as the Lady Wildcats took a 19-5 lead.

The offensive woes continued for Anderson County in the second quarter as they were held scoreless and Oak Ridge took a 28-5 lead into the half.

Scoring came to life for the Lady Mavs in the third quarter as they managed to score 13 points to make it a 42-18 Lady Wildcats lead.

Oak Ridge held the Lady Mavs to just three points in the final quarter as they went on to the win.

Maci Houser led Anderson County with 12 points.

Cold shooting continued to plague the Lady Mavs on Friday as they fell at Powell by a score of 41-29.

Haley Schubert, the leading scorer for Powell, missed the game due to injury.

Both teams struggled from the floor early but the Lady Panthers managed five points over the course of the last three minutes of the first quarter to lead 8-2. A basket by Ashlynn Phillips at the 4:25 mark was the only score for Anderson County. They did not score again until Brooklyn McCoy scored with 2:26 left in the second quarter.

Anderson County trailed 21-4 at halftime.

The third quarter looked a great deal like the first quarter as both teams missed on multiple scoring opportunities.

Still, Powell led 27-8.

After Mollie Longmire opened the fourth quarter with a 3-pointer, the Lady Panthers reeled off five points. The Lady Mavs then went on an 8-0 run to cut the Powell lead to 32-19 with 3:33 left in the game thanks to the scoring of Houser, McCoy, and Callie Bowling.

After a score by the Lady Panthers, Houser scored and Longmire hit another 3-pointer to cut the Powell lead to 34-24 with 1:22 remaining in the game.

That was as close as the Lady Mavs could get as the Lady Panthers held off a late rally.

“We have struggled to score the last three games. I don’t know what the problem is,” said Mike Ellis, head coach of the Lady Mavs.

“We work on it and work on it but we’re just in a slump right now. We’re just missing shots. It’s hard to beat anybody when you dig yourself a hole the way we have the last two games. It’s one of those things we’re going to have to work through,” he said.

McCoy led Anderson County with 10 points.

The Lady Mavs open the Anderson County Christmas Tournament on Tuesday at 3:30 against South Doyle.
