Lady Mavs win Region II Challenge
Two Hannahs and two runs proved to be too much for Richland (Va.) as the Lady Mavs won 2-1.
Each team scored a run in the first inning and the game remained deadlocked until the top of the fifth and final inning, when the Lady Mavs pushed across what would become the winning run.
Hannah Freeman pitched four and two-thirds innings for the win. She allowed one run (none earned) on three hits.
Hannah Bruce pitched the final one-third inning of the game and picked up the save.
Anderson County’s Emilee Fowler went 2-3 at the plate. Maddie Sickau was 1-2 with
a triple and Jada Reeves was 1-3.
Bruce had an RBI and Gracie Webb went 1-1.
On Saturday, the Lady Mavs continued play with a 12-0 rout of Heritage.
The Lady Mavs scored three in the first and added
eight more in the second. They scored one in the third to wrap up scoring.
Bruce got the win as she pitched four innings and allowed just two hits. She also went 3-4 at the plate with three RBI.
Mallorie Overton was 2-3 with a home run and an RBI. Courtney Lively went 2-2
with a double and two RBI. MaKenzie Jones went 2-3 with two RBI and Emelia Yelencich went 2-2.
Sickau went 2-4 with an RBI and Webb was 1-2 with an RBI.
Freeman added a hit as well.
Anderson County shut out
Knoxville Catholic 7-0 in their second game on Saturday.
The Lady Irish kept it close for most of the game as the Lady Mavs plated a run in the top of the third to take a 1-0 lead.
They scored six times in the top of sixth — highlighted by a home run from Sickau — to put the game out of reach.
Then again, with Freeman in the circle, 1-0 was probably already out of reach. She pitched all five innings for the win. Freeman allowed four hits and struck out three.
Reeves went 3-3 with an RBI and Fowler was 1-3 with two RBI.
Bruce and Aundria Long each had a double.
Lively, Bruce, Jones, Yelencich, and Overton had hits as well.
In their final game of the day, the Lady Mavs fell to Ooltelwah by a score of 2-1.
The Lady Owls scored two runs in the top of the first and held on.
Anderson County scored a run in the fifth but could draw no closer.
Bruce took the difficult loss. She went five innings and allowed two runs on seven hits with two strikeouts.
Overton was 1-2 with an RBI and Fowler was 1-2.
The runs scored differential put the Lady Mavs in the championship game against Ooltewah and the two teams were named co-champions.
Anderson County won the coin toss and the Region II Challenge Championship.
