Governor Bill Haslam and First Lady Crissy Haslam presented Prevent Child Abuse Tennessee (PCAT), a statewide non-profit serving families and children, with the Governor’s Award of Excellence in Early Foundations at the Tennessee Commission on Children and Youth’s Child Advocacy Days on March 14, 2018. PCAT was honored for their commitment to ensuring that all children in Tennessee have a strong start to education.
The award honors local organizations that create “Ready Families” and “Ready Children” based on the Tennessee School Readiness model developed by the Tennessee Children’s Cabinet and Early Childhood Advisory Council. PCAT demonstrated their commitment to building strong families across the state through their work to help parents build relationships with their children, guiding parents to be advocates for their children and ensuring children are healthy. They also help parents monitor the social, emotional and physical development of children and help them prepare their children for success in school as they enter kindergarten.
Through evidence based home visiting, a statewide parent leadership program, and several community education initiatives, PCAT works alongside parents across the state who enroll voluntarily to build their knowledge of child development, positive parenting practices, and advocacy, and helps educate communities about the importance of a strong network of support to protect vulnerable families and children.
In Anderson County, Prevent Child Abuse Tennessee’s mission has been to support parents in building loving homes where children feel loved and valued through the work of their Healthy Families program.
In addition, to Healthy Families, Prevent Child Abuse Tennessee provides community education to schools, churches, medical professionals and other interested community groups in the areas of Child Sexual Abuse Prevention, General Abuse and Neglect: Recognition and Prevention, Safe Sleep for Infants, Adverse Childhood Experiences, Building Trauma Informed Communities, and more.
