Girls Inc. plans to expand in Briceville

Rhoni Basden, Executive Director of Girls Inc. of the Tennessee Valley, went in front of County Commission Monday, June 18, to discuss a new expansion program they are bringing to the Briceville community.

Girls Inc. has been in Anderson County since 1978.

They offer after school, summer and sports programs.

“A couple of years ago we started administering an outreach program in Briceville Elementary School,” Basden said.

It was identical to a program that already had success in Oak Ridge.

“We had enough funding to do one day a week and we served about 45 girls a day on that one day we were there.”

“We introduced the girls to STEM work, we do a lot with economic literacy, and we do a lot with setting goals and looking at college attainment. Our big mission is that girls grow up healthy, educated and independent,” said Basden.

Basden stated that after two years of Girls Inc. being apart of the Briceville community, they saw the need for additional services.

“What we’ve decided to do, on a very limited, non – profit budget, is extend this to a five days a week program,” Basden said.

Basden said at this time she is looking to garner support for the program. Looking for individuals who are looking to volunteer, donate or just help spread the word the Girls Inc. is working to bring more programs to Briceville.
