CMS Hawks soar to big win over Concord
A huge second quarter helped lead the Clinton Middle School Hawks to a 32-0 rout of Concord Christian last Thursday.
After the start of the game was delayed because of weather, Clinton opened scoring in the first quarter when Andrew Meier scored on a 57-yard run.
Quarterback Ethan Tinker then completed a pass to Javon Rodd for the successful two-point conversion to stake the Hawks to an 8-0 lead with 1:37 remaining in the first quarter.
As they have been the early part of the season, the Clinton defense was stout and closed down the Concord offense.
The Hawks opened the second quarter with a quick three-play drive, which covered 57 yards.
The drive ended with a 45-yard touchdown pass from Tinker to Teegin Bolinger.
Rodd ran in the two-point conversion to make it a 16-0 Clinton lead with 6:36 left in the first half.
After each traded possessions, the Hawks got the ball back at own 43-yard line late in the quarter.
Four plays later, Meier scored on a 12-yard run.
Mason Hopper ran in the two-point conversion to extend the Clinton lead to 24-0 with 2:42 remaining in the first half.
Once again, the Hawks’ defense stepped up and shut down Concord to give the offense the ball on its own 45-yard line with 51 seconds left in the half.
One play later, Meier broke free on a 55-yard run for a touchdown.
Bryson White then threw to Tycen Tucker for the two-point conversion to give Clinton a 32-0 lead at the half.
Those were the last points scored in the game as CMS Head Coach Eric Woodard substituted freely in the second half, giving his younger players an opportunity to get game experience.
Meier led the Hawks with 166 yards and three touchdowns on just five carries. Gage Wergin had five carries for 25 yards.
Tinker finished 3-4 passing for 54 yards and a touchdown.
Gavin Smith had one kick return for 67 yards for the Hawks.
