Lady Mavs shut out Oneida in soccer
The Anderson County Lady Mavericks prevailed over visiting Oneida last Tuesday 1-0 in a defensive soccer struggle at Maverick Stadium.
While AC goal keeper Mollie Wheeler and her Oneida counterpart fended off shots on goal all night, neither team could score with the exception of Lady Mav Natalie Bartley’s shot into the top of the net with four minutes remaining until halftime for what would be the only goal of the contest.
The Lady Mavs were aggressive offensively throughout as they threatened to score 25 times over 80 minutes — including 14 during the first half and 11 in the second half -— but could only get the ball over the goal line once. Oneida challenged Wheeler 13 times around goal — eight times in the first half and five more times in the second — as the Lady Mav senior thwarted the opposition each time.
AC Coach Chris Curtin said he was happy with the win, but was disappointed in his team’s inability to score more often.
“It’s frustrating how we got the ball down around goal all those times, but could only score once,” said Curtin, whose Lady Mavs played in a Gatlinburg tournament last weekend. “This is a still a young season and everyone is learning, but we need to do a better job in scoring goals when we have the opportunity.”
AC’s win improved the Lady Mavs’ record to 2-0-1.
They are scheduled to play at 6:30 p.m. Thursday at Loudon before hosting Halls at 6:30 p.m. next Tuesday.
The Lady Mavs will make their annual trek to Chattanooga Friday, Sept. 7 and Saturday, Sept. 8 to play in the annual Chattanooga Christian School Tournament.
