When the South Clinton Cutters hosted the Clinton Cutters Saturday night, football took a back seat.

For one play at least.

Trevor Davis, who has Trisomy 21, or Down Syndrome, took the game’s first hand off and raced 50-plus yards for the night’s first score.

He had a wall of blockers before him and a host of defenders giving chase.

Davis would not be denied the end zone.

And he had the crowd — the ENTIRE crowd — cheering him on.

Davis ran onto the field with his team, took midfield as a captain and took part in the coin toss.

And after his touchdown he was carried off the field on the shoulders of his teammates.

Saturday night was not about blocking and tackling, play calling or stats.

It was about compassion, caring, being decent.

It was about community.

Davis wore jersey number 21.

October is Down Syndrome Awareness Month.
