Clinton swept by Powell

Powell’s basketball teams swept Clinton last Tuesday as the Lady Panthers outlasted the Lady Dragons 57-53 before the Panthers scampered by the Dragons 63-44 during the boys’ game.

The Lady Dragons stayed in front of the Lady Panthers during much of the first three periods before the latter gained momentum during the final eight minutes to pull out the four-point win.

Clinton was up 20-15 after one period before enjoying a 29-27 halftime advantage. Clinton led 44-41 after three periods before some missed Lady Dragon shooting and rebounding opportunities down the stretch enabled Powell to take advantage and pull ahead with 3:07 to play.

“We made a lot of nice defensive stops – particularly in the fourth period – but we couldn’t turn enough of them into baskets,” said Lady Dragons Coach Alicia Phillips. “If we could have grabbed more rebounds, we could have won.”

Nikki Russell topped the Lady Dragons with 22 points while Bradleigh Russell added 11.

The boys’ game found Powell take control of the contest beginning in the second period. As the Panthers were up 13-10 after one period, Powell went on a 17-4 run during the second period to lead 30-14 at halftime. Both teams scored 16 apiece during the next eight minutes, but the Dragons were still down 46-30 heading into the final period. Powell outscored Clinton 17-14 down the stretch.

Evan Winchester’s 20 points, including six treys, topped the Dragons. Chase Lockard added a trey.
