Mavs’ season comes to an end
Anderson County’s baseball season ended Monday as the Mavericks were eliminated by Central 5-4 during the District 3-AAA Tournament play at Halls.
Andy Fox scored the first AC run in the first with a single before advancing on a couple of wild pitches before scoring on another wild pitch with Luke Lowery at bat.
After Central pulled ahead 4-1 in the third inning, the Mavs came back to even the score in the bottom of the frame as they sent nine batters to the plate.
Preston Seiber provided a key hit with a two-run single to drive in Caleb Wilhoit and Luke Lowery.
Central’s lone run in the top of the fourth provided what would be the winning tally. The Mavs were hurt by leaving eight runners on base.
Mavs’ relief pitcher Andy Fox struck out four over three innings. Starting pitcher Denver Hubbard also fanned four over four innings.
Seniors Fox and Cole Foust collected two hits apiece.
The Mavs opened tournament play Friday as they suffered a 10-6 defeat at the hands of Central.
Ahead 6-3 after five and a half innings, the Mavs fell apart in the bottom of the sixth when the Bobcats plated seven runs.
Ironically, the Mavs easily defeated the Bobcats twice during the regular season.
Tyler Phillips went two for two as he scored twice. Devin Wilcox also scored twice.
Preston Seiber drove in two runs while Phillips and Wilhoit each collected an RBI.
The Mavs stayed alive in the tournament Friday with a 9-2 elimination-game victory over Campbell County.
A three-run fifth inning and three-run sixth enabled the Mavs to separate themselves from the Cougars.
Ryan Moog pitched four and two thirds innings in relief and struck out seven.
Fox went three for three with two runs. Wilhoit went three for four with a double and two runs scored.
Hubbard went two for four with a run while Phillips batted two for four with a double and scoring twice.
Webber clubbed a double and scored a run.
Fox and Foust each collected an RBI with sacrifice flies. Hubbard slammed two doubles.
The 2019 Baseball Mavericks finish their season over .500, with an 16-15-1 overall record.
