It could be ‘months’ before officer related shooting report is completed
It could take “several months” before The Tennessee Bureau of Investigation (TBI) releases its findings on an officer involved shooting in Clinton last Tuesday, Aug. 13.
A release from the TBI stated Jerry Orlando Weaver, 51, was shot following a 10-15 minute standoff with law enforcement officials shortly before 6 p.m. A call to 911 reported there was an armed man who was thought to be “suicidal” in the 600 block of West Broad Street in Clinton.
Officers with Clinton Police Department, Anderson County Sheriff’s Office, and the Seventh Judicial District Crime Task Force responded to the vicinity and found Weaver “near the roadway” with a handgun.
Officers attempted to pursuade Weaver to drop his weapon. Officers reported Weaver was threatening to “harm himself” and would not lay his gun down.
At some point during this time period — about 10 to 15 minutes — Weaver reportedly raised the handgun and pointed it at law enforcement officers.
“In an attempt to de-escalate the situation, officers tried to negotiate with the subject and convince him to drop the weapon,” the TBI release said. “At some point during the exchange, the individual reportedly pointed the gun at officers, resulting in the officers firing their service weapons, striking him. He was transported to a local hospital, where he was pronounced dead. No law enforcement officers were injured during the incident.”
It’s not clear how many gunshots were fired, who fired them, or what kind of weapon the man might have had.
The TBI is investigating at the request of District Attorney General in the Seventh Judicial District in Anderson County, Dave Clark. Though not a mandate, TBI generally investigates in officer involved shooting in Tennessee.
The shooting occurred outside on West Broad Street in Clinton. Anderson County Sheriff Russell Barker, Clinton Police Chief Vaughn Becker, and Clark all responded to the scene of the shooting.
The officers involved in the shooting have not been identified. The TBI said it does not identify the officers involved in these instances.
Once TBI completes its investigation it will turn its findings and report over to Clark for his “consideration and review.”
