Anderson County picks up first district win at Campbell County

The Anderson County Mavericks collected their first District 3-AAA boys basketball victory of the season last Friday as they erased an early deficit on the way to a 55-46 win at Campbell County.

The Lady Mavericks suffered a 66-20 loss to the Lady Cougars in the opening game of the doubleheader.

After suffering losses in their first two district games against Central and Clinton, Mavericks Coach Derek Wallace said his team needed a district win to build confidence as it heads into the Christmastime portion of the schedule.

“We’re young and have only one senior, and Campbell County came out early shooting successfully from outside,” said Wallace, noting the Cougars made five triples during the first period to take a 16-10 lead after eight minutes. “The fact we were able to make defensive adjustments after that and limit them to only one from outside the rest of the way shows this team is learning.”

While the Cougars were limited in their ability to make threes after the first period, the Mavericks received balanced outside scoring – particularly during the second half. Eli Varner hit two, while Carter Jett, Luke Lowery, Connor Martin and Stone Hatmaker made one apiece.

The Mavs were up 33-28 after three periods. Connor Martin topped the Mavs with 17 points while Varner finished with 12.

Kylee Alvis provided the highlights for the Lady Mavericks in their game as she made two treys on the way to eight points. Lydia Meldrum and Mikayla Sanders made one three-pointer apiece.

The AC teams were scheduled to host Halls last Tuesday, but that game was postponed due to snow and a makeup date has not been determined.
