Twelve Boy Scouts from various troops in East Tennessee, Georgia, and Alabama were given a tour of The Courier News office Saturday, Dec. 28. The Scouts took the tour and learned the workings of a community newspaper as part of their quest for a journalism merit badge. They spent about two hours learning how stories are gathered, what sources are available, the difference between a news story and opinion piece, and the basic “what, where, when, why and who” components of a story. They also learned how putting a newspaper together has changed over the course of the industry’s history.
