Clinton Fire Department wins in blaze of glory

Chance Houk scored 29 points to lead the Clinton Fire Department to a 64-53 victory over the Clinton Police Department in the third annual Clinton Blaze First Responders Game Saturday night at Arowood Arena.

Jill Herman led CPD with 23 points and Weston Hazelhurst added 19.

The CFD has a 2-1 lead in the series.

Basketball Record Book: The Clinton Blaze and Lady Blaze basketball teams both concluded stellar seasons in 2019 and Clinton City Schools Athletic Director E.T. Stamey has begun to compile a record book that chronicles milestones in both Blaze and Lady Blaze hoops history.

The Blaze’s record for wins in a season is 13 while the Lady Blaze have won 15 games in a single season.

Jaden Webber holds the boys record for points in a game with 22. He set the mark against Episcopal School of Knoxville in 2019. For Clinton’s girls, Jailie Rodd scored 16 points against St. Mary’s in 2019.

Track Underway: The Clinton Blaze track and field teams began their 2020 season Monday as they had their first practice. The teams had success last season and sent one athlete, Hutchison to the Junior Olympics.

Stamey said that the track program is looking forward to more success this season. Stamey said that 40 athletes showed up for the season-opening meeting last week.

Blaze Faculty Basketball Game: The Clinton City Schools faculty basketball game is slated for Feb. 25 at 7 p.m. at Arowood Arena and Stamey said he is seeking CCS teachers and faculty members to sign up to play. Limited tickets are available.

Bowling: Sign-ups for the Blaze bowling league will continue through Feb. 15. The season is slated to get underway on March 4.

Bowling is an intramural league and had a successful first season in 2019.

Blaze Coat Drive to continue through winter: The Blaze began a coat drive late last year and Stamey said that the campaign will continue through the winter.

Blaze and the Anderson County Chamber of Commerce: The Clinton Blaze athletic program has taken the community by storm and now, the Anderson County Chamber of Commerce is chronicling the program and other day-to-day happenings in Clinton City Schools.

CCS Teachers to Compete in Blaze Teachers Bowling League: Area elementary school teachers will compete in a bowling league at Clinton Community Center. League play begins after the Christmas Break.

Blaze Tennis Clinic: The Blaze tennis clinic will be held in April and May. It will be instructed by Ernie Brooks. The dates for the clinic will be April 14, 21, and 28. The clinic continues in May with sessions on May 5 and May 12.

It will take place at the City Tennis Courts at the softball fields from 3:30-5 p.m. and sign-ups will begin soon.
