Lady Dragons end Lady Mavs’ season

Clinton High School’s Lady Dragons beat the Lady Mavericks in the first game of the District Tournament. The final score was 80-22.

The Mavs had a rough finish to a rough season, with a young team beset by injuries and sickness, while Clinton has been an unusually strong team. Clinton shot a 48-percent effective field goal percentage, with 27 two-point baskets. The only statistic where Anderson County won out was blocks, where they managed three over Clinton’s zero. Apart from that one stat, Clinton ran the court, totaling 21 steals, and a whopping 42 rebounds. Anderson County’s 37 turnovers resulted in 49 points for Clinton.

Kylee Alvis led the Lady Mavericks’ efforts, finishing with eight points and four steals, as well as an assist and two rebounds. Behind Alvis, Lydia Meldrum finished with seven points. Meldrum led the team in rebounds, totaling six, as well as two deflections. Other notable standouts for the Lady Mavs were Courtney Neer, who finished with two steals and a deflection, and Abby Dople, who score the third highest number of points for the Lady Mavericks. Dople also finished with 3 offensive rebounds and a deflection. On the Clinton side, Sarah Burton led the Lady Dragons by a sizeable margin, finishing with 42 points under her belt, including 11 rebounds and nine steals. Behind Burton, Naiyah Sanders continued her impressive streak, with 14 points that included three treys. Sanders finished with five assists, five deflections, and five steals.
