County could pull in state grant

Anderson County Mayor Terry Frank told the county’s Operations Committee that the state government is willing to step in and help offset some of the costs brought on by the COVID-19 pandemic.

She said the state government has announced grants to help cities and counties, and Anderson County is eligible for $1,093,102 worth of federal funds. Grant amounts are determined by population.

There are some caveats, however.

The funds have to be used for capital-improvement projects, or upgrading equipment, such as emergency, law-enforcement, and first-responders’ equipment — public safety upgrades. Capital improvements could be anything from new roofs to HVAC units.

“They don’t want you to go out and build a new building or anything like that,” she said.

The county will have to apply for the funds, though. Those applications will be available around April 30, and have to be submitted no later than April 2021.
