No Fair No Fourth

Anderson County’s ‘Best Six Days of Summer’ canceled

Anderson County Fair Board President Steve Queener made it official Monday: The 2020 Anderson County Fair has been canceled.

“It is with great sadness that the Anderson County Fair Board has decided to cancel the 2020 fair,” Queener said via a release.

“The decision was based on concerns surrounding the COVID-19 global pandemic.”

The Anderson County Fair has been a constant for 133 years.

It is more than a social gathering, however, as many organizations use the fair as a fundraising venue.

Also, it is a highlight for showcasing worksfrom the Anderson County 4-H program.

“The fair was scheduled July 13-18. We were hopeful to continue the ‘Best Six Days of Summer,’ Anderson County’s largest social event; however, after consulting with state and local leaders, we feel that cancelling is in the best interest of our community,” the release said.

“Maintaining social distancing requirements would prove to be difficult, if not impossible. Our decision was made being mindful of our fair attendees, numerous volunteers, exhibitors and sponsors.

“The fair wishes to thank all our sponsors and supporters.”

Queener added the fair will be back in summer 2021 “bigger and better.”

Also canceled are Fourth of July activities countywide.

In a release from the city of Clinton, it was noted: “The annual Fourth of July event is canceled for this year. Instead, the city is hoping for a Labor Day weekend celebration; no details have been confirmed. Parks and Rec officials are encouraging citizens to safely participate in the celebration of our independence, by decorating your homes and sharing them with us using Twitter, Facebook, and Instagram with hashtag, #clintonchillandgrill.”

Rocky Top City Manager Michael Foster said the city of Rocky Top has also canceled its Fourth of July activities. Rocky Top will also look to a form of Labor Day celebration.

“We’ll look at doing something along those lines as the time draws closer,” he said.

Norris Day, the city of Norris Fourth of July celebration, has also been canceled.
