Democrat Women to celebrate suffrage movement at their Sept. 3 meeting

The Anderson County Democratic Women’s Club will celebrate the 100th anniversary of women’s suffrage with a virtual program on the suffrage movement’s history featuring author Elaine Weiss and attorney Wanda Sobieski at a virtual club meeting at 6:30 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 3.

Weiss, an award-winning journalist and writer who lives in Baltimore, Maryland, is the author of the book “The Woman’s Hour: The Great Fight to Win the Vote.”

Sobieski, of Knoxville, an advocate for preserving East Tennessee’s role in the fight for women’s suffrage, will interview Weiss during the program.

Sobieski is founder of the Women’s Suffrage Coalition and was a proponent of the women’s suffrage memorial statue on Knoxville’s Market Square.

Weiss’ book is slated to become a television production, developed by Steven Spielberg’s Amblin TV, with Hillary Clinton, the former secretary of state, first lady, and presidential candidate, as the executive producer.

Weiss is also the author of “Fruits of Victory: The Women’s Land Army of America in the Great War.”
