‘Light’ but still a schedule

There is a lighter schedule this week, as Clinton football is still shut down for at least one more week due to an abundance of caution regarding COVID-19.

Anderson County, meanwhile, hosts Howard Tech for a home conference game after last week’s barn-burner against South Doyle that ended with a one-point-loss for Anderson County. That loss put Anderson County at 2-2 for the season.

Howard Tech also sits at 2-2 for the season, after losing to Brainerd and Tyner Academy.

The Hustlin’ Tigers’ wins have come from a 21-14 victory over Middle Tennessee Christian, and a 2-0 victory over Stratford.

Coach Gillum said the team is ready for the game.

“I feel good,” he said. “Anthony White will be back this week and we’re looking forward to getting him back onto the field. He was a big part of this team before he got hurt. Obviously anytime you take a loss, you can’t wait to get back out on the field and get that taste out of your mouth, so we’re just ready to get back on the field and get going.”

Still, even if they are ready, the Mavs are approaching the game with the same respect they would any other opponent.

“Howard is kind of chaotic on defense, so it’s going to take some discipline from the offensive line to make sure they’re doing what needs doing,” Gillum said. “For our defense, they’re just a real athletic team, so we’ve just got to make sure we tackle well. We don’t want them out in space where we have to try to run them down. “

On the middle school volleyball side of things, this is the final week of volleyball, with Lake City facing off against Clinton at Clinton on Sept. 14, while Norris hosts LaFollette Middle for their last game of the season on Sept. 17. Norwood’s final game also comes on Sept. 17, when they host Jellico.

Meanwhile, in high school volleyball, Anderson County was to host Clinton for their annual rivalry game on Tuesday, Sept. 15.
