A 37-year-old Dutch Valley single mother of two young children died in a head-on collision on North Main Street in Clinton on Friday afternoon (Dec. 11), according to the Clinton Police Department.

Elizabeth Rau of Beets Valley Road was the sole occupant of a Hyundai four-door sedan that hit a Dodge Ram pickup on the highway in front of the Anderson County Health Department, Chief of Police Vaughn Becker said.

The accident, reported at 5:16 p.m., occurred when one of the two vehicles crossed the centerline and hit the other one head-on, Becker said, adding that Ms. Rau was pronounced dead at the scene.

He said the other driver, who also was alone in his vehicle, was taken by ambulance to a hospital, but has since been released.

Becker said the accident is still under investigation, and that he could not say yet which of the vehicles crossed the centerline.

There was a witness to the accident who was driving behind one of the vehicles, the chief said.

Alcohol was not believed to be a factor in the crash, and no charges have been filed in connection with the accident, Becker said.

Ms. Rau’s family set up a GoFundMe page on Facebook to raise money for her funeral expenses and for her children.
