Blasting will close Edgemoor Road with rolling roadblocks

Rolling traffic blocks on Edgemoor Road just west of the Bull Run Steam Plant and big booms in the air will be common during weekdays and Saturdays over the next few weeks as the Tennessee Valley Authority excavates at the site of a new power substation.

Blasting for the new Anderson Substation will occur from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. as the excavation continues in the area of Haw Ridge Park and the Melton Lake Greenway, TVA said.

The substation will be in the area between Edgemoor Road and Old Edgemoor Lane near the entrance to Haw Ridge Park, and TVA says the blasts will be seen and heard in at least a quarter-mile range of the site.

For a period of about 10 minutes for each blast, roadblocks will keep traffic off of Edgemoor Road and Old Edgemoor Lane, and the Melton Lake Greenway will be closed for the same 10-minute periods, the federal utility said.

Warning signals will sound prior to each blast, and “following inspection of the blast area,” a TVA notice said.

The blasting portion of the substation work should take about three weeks, weather permitting. Grading and earth moving on the site already has been underway for several weeks. The site is just west of the Clinch River bridge on Edgemoor Road.

Signs posted last week on gates at the Haw Ridge Park area say:

“Crews with the Tennessee Valley Authority will begin blasting rock using controlled, low-charge detonations during construction of the new Anderson substation. Traffic and pedestrian controls will be in place.”

The site is directly across the river from TVA’s Bull Run power plant.
