County approves $7,500 for American Legion Post

Anderson County Commission approved, by a 12-2 vote Monday, July 19, to allocate $7,500 to American Legion Post 112 in Oliver Springs for roof repairs.

Post Chaplain and Financial Officer Don Long told commissioners that Post 112 had reached out to the other counties it served as well.

He said, “We haven’t been able to get anywhere with Roane County; Morgan County says they’re ‘gonna,’ but never have … them and, “the city of Oliver Springs says they’re broke.”

Long told commissioners that while there were other repairs needed at the post, the roof was the biggest concern because the longer it went unrepaired the more damage it would be causing.

Estimates for fixing the roof are about $15,000. A GoFundMe page set up by Anderson County Commission Chairman Joshua Anderson has raised approximately $2,700 so far.

“With the $7,500 from you and the money from the GoFundMe page, we veterans are going to go out and hit the streets and we’ll raise that money one way or another and get this roof fixed,” Long said.

Commissioners Denver Waddell and Phil Yager were the two “no” votes. Anderson abstained from the vote because he is directly involved with the organization, having set up the GoFundMe page.
