RSCC volleyball gearing up for season opener

Raiders Recap

The Roane State volleyball squad hit the road – literally – for some outdoor hill work and strength training.
There is a lot of “new” going on in the halls of the Roane State Athletic Department. Stay tuned for several announcements, which are anticipated in the coming days regarding personnel and other issues.

Meanwhile, several teams are (or will be) taking to their respective links, courts and fields to begin preparation for play in the coming fall. Here are a few snapshots of what some of the Raiders teams are doing.

VOLLEYBALL

The Roane State volleyball squad is less than three weeks from opening their second season of play. Last week, the team hit the road – literally – for some outdoor hill work and strength training. This week, the team begins two-a-day practices in preparation for their Aug. 20 opener in the Spartanburg Methodist Tournament in at Spartanburg Methodist College in Spartanburg, SC.

Also coming up this week, on Aug. 4 at 7:30 a.m., the team will have its annual Picture Day and first-ever Media Day. The event will take place at the Roane State gymnasium on the main campus in Harriman.

BASEBALL

The Raiders’ baseball program has been busy over the summer with recruiting and planning for the coming campaign. There have also been some noticeable additions at the ball park. One specific addition is a plyo-wall, which baseball players use for maintaining arm health and warm-up. According to head coach Cam Hamsley, banners are also on the agenda. Look for new signage to go up soon to promote the RSCC baseball program and help beautify Maurice K. Williams Field.

MEN’S BASKETBALL

Finally, one of the new faces you can expect to see on the court for the Raiders men’s basketball team this fall is freshman guard Trey Johnson. Johnson averaged 28-points per game in his senior season at Cosby High School, notched a school record 60-point performance (in only three quarters of play) and was a finalist for TSSAA Class-A Mr. Basketball.

Johnson will join another Cosby alum, Austin McKeehan, on the Roane State roster this season.
