Solway Veterans Memorial will be dedicated Sept. 30

The Solway Veterans Memorial dedication ceremony will be held from 10–10:45 a.m. Thursday, Sept. 30, at 9014 Solways Ferry Road, Knoxville.

Sponsors of the memorial are the Knoxville Chapter of the TVA Retirees Association, Bicentennial Volunteers, and Solway Baptist Church.

This memorial serves as a site that offers the opportunity for all to honor, respect, and remember those who served our country. The memorial is on the “Veterans Memorial Mile” on Highway 62 in the Solway Community.

Brig. Gen. (retired) Jim Mungenast (also a TVA retiree) is coordinating the event. Included will be presenting the colors, music by a bagpiper, playing of Taps, and singing of National Anthem. The Rev. Dr. Pat Polis, president of the Captain Bill Robinson Chapter 1078, Vietnam Veterans of America, will serve as master of ceremonies.

Speakers will include Lt. Gov. Randy McNally; state Rep. Justin Lafferty (District 89); and Sgt. Major (retired) Tom Humphries, Knox County Veterans Service Office (representing Mayor Jacobs.)

Sponsors, contributors, elected officials, project team members and others will be recognized. Military representatives and Gold Star mothers/families will place a wreath at the site. Additionally, a military representative from each major conflict will attend as a special guest.

This is an outdoor event, but in case of inclement weather, the ceremony will be moved indoors at Solway Baptist Church.

To keep safe, the organizers ask that COVID guidelines be observed.

Should CDC or Knox County guidelines change regarding large group gatherings due to COVID, the dedication ceremony will be rescheduled.
