Round One: Seymour comes knocking

The Anderson County Mavericks will host the Seymour Eagles in the opening round of the 4A playoffs Friday night.

The Eagles finished the regular season 6-4 (2-3, fourth place in Region 1 4A). Seymour competes in one of the toughest regions in 4A which features powerhouses Greenville and Elizabethton.

Seymour fell to Greenville by a score of 66-7 and to Elizabethton by a score of 56-8.

“That region is top heavy,” said Davey Gillum, head coach of the Mavericks. “It’s hard to gauge how good they are seeing them [Seymour] play those two teams,” said Davey Gillum, head coach of the Mavericks.

The Eagles feature a bruising rushing attack led by senior Brendon Harris, who finished the regular season with 1.041 yards and 14 touchdowns.

“He’s pretty good. He’s stocky and weighs about 230 pounds and he’s a pretty good linebacker too,” Gillum said.

Senior quarterback Eli Funck averaged 114 yards passing per game. He finished the regular season with 10 touchdown passes and seven interceptions.

Seniors Ryan Lodari and Brooks Crowder led the team in receiving yards and touchdowns. Lodari had 389 yards and seven touchdowns while Crowder had 320 yards and three touchdowns.

Kick-off is scheduled for 7 p.m.
