Last Friday, Mitch Cupples was named the ninth head coach of the Anderson County Lady Mavericks basketball team.

He replaces Nicky Anosike, who stepped down to focus on her family after giving birth to twins last summer.

Cupples has been part of Anderson County High School and the athletics program for the past 15 years, where he served as assistant basketball coach for the boys’ program.

“It’s an honor, a privilege, and a blessing,” he said. “I love Anderson County. I tell people, you go down the hallway of Anderson County High School you see my wife’s picture and my daughters’ pictures as All-State in basketball and volleyball.

“It’s an honor to be a head coach on this campus. It’s a great place to work and a great, great administration and great athletic backing from the community,” Cupples said.

He is married to Karen Cupples, principal at Fairview Elementary. She was a standout for the Lady Mavs on both the basketball and volleyball courts. Their daughters, Kaitlyn and Kristen, were also standouts in both sports at ACHS. Karen and Kaitlyn were named All-State in volleyball while Kristen was named All-State in basketball. Kaitlyn played college basketball at Carson Newman, while Kristen played at King.

“It’s a blessing to be able to lead a program here,” Cupples said.

Cupples, who played college basketball at Tennessee Tech, is also a teacher at ACHS and leads the Fellowship of Christian Athletes at the school, roles he will continue to fill.
