Young Mav wrestlers take fourth in 28-team meet in Virginia

Anderson County High School’s “Mat Mavs” had a successful weekend at the University of Virginia at Wise during the Dec. 17-18 meet at the David J. Prior Convention Center.

Taking part in the 28 team Bobby Bates Classic is Wise, Va., the Mavs finished fourth and had nine wrestlers bring home medals.

The Mavs are young, and finishing fourth as a team is a huge step in the squad’s growth.

Nine individual medals though … Very impressive.

Saturday morning the Mavs found themselves in eighth-place with six wrestlers still in the championship round and six in the consolation round.

At the end of the meet the Mavs had grappled their way from eighth to fourth place — out of 28 teams — and put nine wrestlers on the podium.

Bringing home medals were:

106-pound: Gabriel Dietlin, third;

120-pound: Isaiah Tuckey, sixth;

126-pound: Lucas Prewitt, second;

152-pound: Scotty Flatford, eighth;
