‘Cool as the other side of the pillow’

The Anderson County Lady Mavericks started a very busy week with a pair of big wins.

On Tuesday, the Lady Mavs defeated visiting Oakdale by a score of 59-43.

Anderson County took an eight-point lead early on the scoring of Kylee Alvis, Lydia Meldrum, Emily Mustard and Jaylynn Bullock. The Lady Mavs rode the scoring of that same quintet to a 33-13 halftime lead.

Oakdale cut into the Anderson County lead in the third quarter, making it a 40-27 game, but that was as close as they could get as Meldrum paced the offense of the Lady Mavs.

Meldrum led all scorers with 29 points, while Alvis added 13.

On Friday night, Anderson County needed overtime to take down visiting district rival Halls on a buzzer-beater 3-pointer by Bullock, 50-47.

The Lady Mavs led 10-9 after the first quarter and clung to a 21-20 lead at the half as Bullock and Mustard provided the bulk of the scoring for Anderson County.

The Lady Mavs extended their lead to 33-31 in the third quarter as the Lady Red Devils refused to go away.

Halls rallied in the fourth quarter to tie the game and force overtime.

In overtime, Anderson County held the Lady Red Devils to just one basket. As time ticked down in overtime, freshman Shelby Kelly coolly knocked down a 3-pointer from the corner as the buzzer sounded giving the Lady Mavs the thrilling win and a 2-1 district record.

Bullock led Anderson County with 12 points while Mustard and Meldrum each scored 11. Alvis had 10 points to give the Lady Mavs four players scoring in double figures.

The Lady Mavs opened play in the 2021 Anderson County Christmas Tournament on Saturday with a 69-32 loss to Stone Memorial.

The visitors opened an 18-5 lead in the first quarter and extended it to 33-13 at the half as Anderson County struggled to get their offense working. Stone Memorial exploded for 23 points in the third quarter and put the game out of reach as they built a 56-21 lead.

The Lady Mavs were unable to cut into the lead as the visitors picked up the win.

Alvis led Anderson County with eight points.

On Monday, the Lady Mavs fell in the second round of the tournament to William Blount by a score of 56-29.

Neither team shot the ball exceptionally well in the first quarter as the Lady Govs took a 9-5 lead. Anderson County struggled to score in the second quarter as William Blount carried a 23-8 lead into the half.

Scoring picked up for the Lady Mavs in the third quarter but unfortunately for them, it did as well for the Lady Govs, who extended their lead to 41-18. Anderson County could not reduce the deficit in the fourth quarter and the Lady Govs went on to the win.

Bullock led the Lady Mavs with eight points.
