Short-handed Mavs fall in early round of home classic

  • Anderson County’s Bryson Vowell goes for a bucket earlier in the season against Halls.

  • Anderson County’s Connor Martin hits from beyond the arc earlier in the 2021-22 season.

In their final game of 2021 Anderson County Christmas Tournament, the short-handed Anderson County Mavericks fell to First Baptist Academy 77-49.

“My big guys were out - Zeke West, Jacob Dooley, and Gracen Bradshaw. All three were out sick and they [FBA] had a 6’7 post player [Omarion Thomas], a pretty solid kid. They also had a Fulton transfer [Kadell Robinson] that averaged 37 points throughout the tournament. They’re a really good team,” said Derek Wallace, head coach of the Mavs.

The Eagles took a 16-7 first quarter lead and stretched that advantage to 25 points at 33-18 at halftime.

The Mavs played them even in the third quarter but could not close the gap. FBA pulled away down the stretch and took the win.

Bryson Vowell led Anderson County with 21 points while Brandon Dake posted 10 points.

Anderson County returns to action on Tuesday, Jan. 4 when they host Hardin Valley Academy. Tip-off is set for 7:30 p.m.
