Lady Dragons win two at Harriman Christmas Tournament
The Clinton Lady Dragons wrapped up 2021 with two wins in the Harriman Christmas Tournament.
On Tuesday, the Lady Dragons beat Midway 48-46.
“We moved the ball quite a bit,” said Alicia Phillips, head coach of the Lady Dragons. “Our press in the second half really helped us, but we had some big shots by Bailey Burroughs, Sydney Herrell, and Ally York as well.”
The two teams played to an 11-11 tie in the first quarter as Bailey Burroughs dropped in five points while Sydney Herrell added a 3-pointer and Ally York added a basket to keep the game even. Clinton managed to eke out a two-point lead at the half at 28-26 as Belle Starnes chipped in five points to join the trio of Burroughs, Herrell, and York in the scoring column.
The Lady Waves surged into the lead in the third quarter at 40-37 as York and Starnes added 3-pointers to go with three free throws by Burroughs to keep Clinton close.
The Lady Dragons reclaimed the lead in the fourth quarter as their defense held Midway to just six points. Herrell added another trey and York scored six points to help propel them to the hard-fought win.
York led all scorers with 18 points, while Burroughs added 13.

On Wednesday, the Lady Dragons handed Oakdale a 60-38 loss.
Clinton took control in the first quarter going up 19-7 as York nailed a pair of 3-pointers as part of a 10-point outburst. Starnes hit a 3-pointer as part of her seven-points scored in the quarter. The Lady Eagles battled back in the second quarter but still trailed 35-19 at halftime. Burroughs scored nine points in the second quarter to help the Lady Dragons extend the lead.
York and Herrell added 3-pointers in the third quarter as Clinton held a 50-26 lead. The Lady Dragons coasted a bit in the fourth quarter as Starnes and Ashanti Davis each knocked down a trey to help seal the win.
“Belle Starnes and Ashanti Davis shot the ball well,” Phillips said. “Our press separated us, and again we had some great shots from the outside, and Bailey did a great job inside.”
Starnes led Clinton with 17 points, while Burroughs added 15 and York had 13 points.
The Lady Dragons (10-4, 3-0 in district play) visit Fulton on Thursday.
They travel to Carter on Tuesday. Tip-off for both games is set for 6 p.m.
