Mavs get win as ‘fill in’ at Claiborne Christmas tourney
The Anderson County Mavericks beat Claiborne 82-53 on Wednesday in the Union County Christmas Tournament.
The Mavericks filled in for one game only in the tournament after a team dropped out due to illness.
Anderson County made its presence known early as the Mavs hung 23 points on Claiborne in the first quarter. The Bulldogs battled back with 20 points in the second quarter but unfortunately for them, the Mavs scored 20 as well to lead 43-33 at halftime.
“We tried to play man-to-man full court instead of our zone press where we trap as much and our kids bought into that and extended our defense,” said Derek Wallace, head coach of the Mavericks. “We got a lot of easy buckets out of it.”
Anderson County built a 59-43 lead in the third quarter before closing the game out with 23 more points in the fourth quarter.
“Connor [Martin] had a nice game and had 10 rebounds — a double-double. Cole Russell, who played some early in the season but after the football guys came back hadn’t played as much, I gave him a shot early and he rewarded me with six 3’s. We’ve been waiting on him to get hot and he can flat-out shoot the ball. That’s his skill and that opened the game up.”
The Mavs’ Cole Russell led all scorers with 19 points, while Connor Martin had 18 and Brandon McGhee added 13 points.
