Mavs drop non-district tilt to HVA Hawks
“We played pretty well,” said Derek Wallace, head coach of the Mavs. “We had three moments in the game where it was a 6- or 8-0 run. We were able to cut into it the first two times, and the third time it happened was pretty much the difference in the game.”
Both teams lit up the scoreboard in the first quarter, but the Hawks managed a 17-14 lead. The second quarter saw even more scoring as the Mavs remained in striking distance, trailing 36-32 at the half.
The third quarter was more of the same as Hardin Valley managed to outscore Anderson County by just two points, but it extended the lead to 54-48. The Hawks pulled away in the fourth quarter as the Mavs could not close the scoring gap.
Connor Martin led Anderson County with 17 points, while Tate Russell added 10 points.
The Mavericks (9-7, 0-3 in district play) go on the road Friday night for a huge district game against crosstown rival Clinton at 7:30 p.m.
They host Oliver Springs on Saturday at 3:30 p.m.
Next week, the Mavs have two non-district games. They host Northview Academy on Monday and travel to Oliver Springs on Tuesday. Tip-off for those games is set for 7:30 p.m.
