Clinton sees three hit double digits in Lady Dragons’ win

The Clinton Lady Dragons beat the visiting Anderson County Lady Mavericks 55-41 last Friday night.

The Lady Dragons got an early advantage as Bailey Burroughs, Belle Starnes, and Sarah Burton sparked an 11-2 run. Kylee Alvis and Emily Mustard scored the only two baskets for Anderson County in the quarter.

After Lydia Meldrum opened the second quarter with a basket for the Lady Mavs, the Lady Dragons went on an 8-2 run. The teams traded baskets for the remainder of the half with Clinton leading 30-16 at the half.

In the second half, the Lady Dragons leaned on the scoring of Burton, Bailey, Starnes, and Ally York to take a 49-28 lead in the third quarter. Jaylynn Bullock dropped in eight points while Alvis added seven for the Lady Mavs in the fourth quarter to cut into the Clinton lead, but it was too little, too late to overcome the lead the Lady Dragons built in the first three quarters.

Burton led all scorers with 18 points, while Burroughs added 16 and Starnes had 14.

Alvis led Anderson County with 14 points while Bullock had 12 and Mustard scored 10.

On Tuesday, the Lady Mavs fell at Seymour by a score of 48-27.

Anderson County grabbed an early lead but the Lady Eagles responded with a big second quarter to take a 21-13 halftime lead. The Lady Mavs kept the game close in the third quarter, but Seymour took over the game in the fourth quarter and took the win.

Bullock led the Lady Mavs with 11 points.

On Wednesday, the Lady Dragons lost on the road to Fulton by a score of 56-41. York led Clinton with 18 points and Burton had 16 points in the loss. Burroughs added five points and Ashanti Davis had two points in that game. Detailed stats were not available at press time.

On Saturday, the Lady Mavs beat visiting Oliver Springs 54-25.

The Lady Mavs jumped out to an 18-6 first quarter lead as they clicked offensively and defensively. At the half they led 30-12 and easily held off the Lady Bobcats in the second half.

Alvis and Mustard each scored 13 points to lead all scorers. Meldrum added 12 for the Lady Mavs.

Clinton (12-5, 4-0 in district play) will visit Cocke County on Wednesday for a game rescheduled from Monday due to inclement weather.

They travel to Halls for another key district game on Friday and visit Hardin Valley on Monday. Tip-off for all three games is scheduled for 6 p.m.

Anderson County (5-5, 2-2 in district play) will host district rival Scott on Friday and visit region rival Carter on Tuesday. Tip-off for both games is 6 p.m.
