District Attorney’s Office will investigate fatal crash involving THP

One person died and another was injured when a car chase involving the Tennessee Highway Patrol ended with a crash near the intersection of U.S. 441 and Mountain Road about 2 p.m. Sunday, Jan. 30.

The driver of the vehicle being chased was killed in the crash, and the passenger was injured and taken to an area hospital. The trooper was also taken to the hospital, and was treated and released.

An autopsy will be performed on the driver of the car who died in the crash.

District Attorney General Dave Clark said in a press release that the crash happened after a pursuit that “traveled over multiple roadways.”

The incident is under investigation by THP and Clark’s office. The THP Critical Incident Response Team responded to the scene and will conduct a crash reconstruction, the release said.

The identities of those involved are being withheld during the investigation.

“Consistent with our long-standing policy and in order to preserve the integrity of the investigation and ability to use evidence and investigative findings in a criminal case, should one arise from the incident, this office will not be making public statements about evidence or the circumstances of the investigation until the investigation is actually complete,” Clark said via his release.

“Also consistent with our long-standing practice, once all of the evidence is received and the investigation is complete, I will issue a comprehensive report,” Clark said. “If there are no criminal charges arising from the investigation, then the report and materials will be made available.”

Clark added any questions will be answered once the investigation is complete, providing there are no criminal charges.
