Lady Mavs pick up two region wins

The Anderson County Lady Mavericks earned two region wins last week.

On Tuesday, the Lady Mavs traveled to Carter and won 53-20.

Anderson County took a 13-3 lead in the first quarter as the defense shut down the Lady Hornets while Emily Mustard, Lydia Meldrum, Kylee Alvis, and Shelby Kelly provided the offense.

Jaylynn Bullock got in on the scoring in the second quarter as the defense continued to hold Carer down. The Lady Mavs led 27-6 at the half.

Anderson County extended its lead to 41-15 in the third quarter and outscored the Lady Hornets 12-5 in the fourth quarter for the win.

Mustard led all scorers with 20 points.

On Friday, Anderson County fell at district rival Halls by a score of 61-37.

The Halls Lady Red Devils had their offense and defense going early as they jumped out to a 13-2 lead in the first quarter. They extended their lead to 31-11 at the half.

The Lady Mavs offense bounced back somewhat in the third quarter but Halls held a 45-24 lead. Anderson County was unable to close the deficit in the fourth quarter.

Mustard led the Lady Mavs with 14 points while Bullock added 11 points.

On Saturday the Lady Mavs beat visiting Northview Academy 55-48.

Both teams shot the ball well in the first quarter as Mustard, Meldrum, and Bullock helped Anderson County to a 14-13 lead. Alvis joined in the scoring in the second quarter as the Lady Mavs took a 28-20 lead heading into the half.

Northview managed to cut into the Lady Mavs’ lead in the third quarter at 38-32. The game ended just as it began with both teams scoring well with Anderson County outscoring the visitors by one point to hold for the win.

Mustard led all scorers with 19 points while Bullock added 14 points and Meldrum added 10 in the winning effort.

The Lady Mavs (6-7, 2-4 in district play) return to action on Monday, Feb. 7, when they visit Maryville.
