Mavs fall to Carter Hornets, Red Devils

On Tuesday, the Anderson County Mavericks dropped a road game to Carter by a score of 66-45.

The Hornets took a 17-8 lead in the first quarter and pushed it to 38-21 at the half. The Mavs battled back in the third and managed to trim the Carter lead to 49-33. They continued to cut into the lead in the fourth quarter before the Hornets pulled away for the win.

Tate Russell led Anderson County with 12 points while Connor Martin and Cole Russell each added 11 points.

On Friday, the Mavs traveled to Halls and lost to the hot shooting Red Devils by a score of 84-59.

Halls was, forgive the expression, on fire in the first quarter as they took a 24-10. And while Mavs managed to increase their scoring in the second quarter, so did the Red Devils as they led 49-25 at the half. Halls continued their torrid pace in the third quarter as they built their lead to 75-42. The Mavs outscored the Red Devils in the final eight minutes but could not make the early deficit.

Martin led Anderson County with 12 points.

The Mavs returned home on Saturday and got a 65-60 win over Northview Academy.

Anderson County took a 15-9 lead in the first quarter but Northview responded with a big second quarter as the Mavs carried a 26-23 lead into the break. Anderson County got some separation in the third quarter as they extended their lead to 49-40. Northview attempted a comeback in the fourth quarter but the Mavs withstood the charge and held on for the win.

Martin led all scorers with 21 points while Carter Nelson added 16 points.

The Mavericks (12-12, 0-6 in district play) return to action on Monday, Feb. 7, when they visit Maryville.
