Lady Mavs flex defensive muscle in two wins

The Anderson County Lady Mavericks beat the Knoxville Lady Ambassadors 62-21 Friday night.

“We played defense like I want us to — not let people get to the rim and keep them out of the paint,” said Mitch Cupples, head coach of the Lady Mavs.

The Lady Mavs jumped out to a 16-0 first-quarter lead and extended their lead to 34-10 at the half as Kyle Alvis, Lydia Meldrum, Emily Mustard, and Jaylynn Bullock put points on the board for Anderson County.

In the third quarter, Shelby Kelly, Rowan Smith, and Kyrstan Campbell got in on the scoring for the Lady Mavs as they pushed their lead to 58-16. Neither team put up a great deal of offense in the fourth quarter as Anderson County took the win.

Mustard led all scorers with 14 points, while Alvis and Bullock each scored 13 and Meldrum added 11 points.

On Saturday night, the Lady Mavs picked up a 52-47 win at Fulton.

“It was a big road win for us,” Cupples said. “We had a big fourth quarter. Lydia Meldrum hit a couple of big threes and made our free throws.”

The Lady Mavs took a 13-12 lead in the first quarter as Alvis, Meldrum, Mustard, and Bullock generated the offense for Anderson County.

The Lady Mavs took a 19-17 lead at the half as shooting cooled off for both teams in the second quarter. The Lady Mavs took a 30-27 lead at the end of the third quarter and put the game away in the fourth quarter as they sank eight of 10 free-throws down the stretch.

Alvis led Anderson County with 17 points while Meldrum had 14 and Mustard 10.

The Lady Mavs fell to visiting Maryville 53-17 Monday night. Game stats were not available at press time.

The Lady Mavs visit a couple of region foes to end the regular season. They travel to Gibbs Wednesday night and to Northview Academy Friday. Tip-off for each game is scheduled for 6 p.m.
