Anderson County wins wild affair at Gibbs

The Anderson County Mavericks earned a hard-fought 50-49 win at Gibbs last Wednesday night.

Largely on the strength of 3-pointers by Carter Nelson, Connor Martin, and Brandon Dake, the Mavs took an 11-10 lead in the first quarter.

Gibbs opened the second quarter on a 7-2 run to take the lead, but 3-pointers by Dake and Martin late in the half put Anderson County back in the lead at 25-22 at the half.

The Eagles had an 8-2 run late in the third quarter as Bryson Vowell scored eight points for the Mavs to help them hold a 40-39 lead heading into the fourth quarter.

Both teams traded baskets, keeping Anderson County in front until the 3:18 mark of the fourth quarter when Gibbs tied the game at 44-44. With just 50 seconds left, Zeke West scored to give the Mavs a 50-48 lead. Gibbs attempted to tie as time expired as a shooting foul was called with 0.1 seconds left.

The shooter made the first free throw but missed the second as Anderson County held on for the win.

Martin led all scorers with 18 points, while Vowell added 12 and Dake 11.

The Mavs ended the regular season at Northview Academy last Friday night with a 70-67 loss.

Northview took a 20-17 lead in the first quarter and then extended its lead to 38-26 at the half. The Mavs managed to cut into the Northview lead in the third quarter, making it a 50-42 game. Both squads lit up the scoreboard in the fourth quarter but the furious comeback by Anderson County fell just short.

Martin led all scorers with 24 points, while Nelson added 16.

Anderson County (15-15, 0-6 in district play) will host the district tournament and face No. 1 seed Clinton Friday. Tip-off is 7:30 p.m.
